Well, if you kept reading the same article (and I actually can´t believe I´m discussing with somebody who referres to Wikipedia, especially in a “techno/electronic music” matter), you might have seen that there are lots of various definitions and none of them is an official one – even in the original sources for your own quote.
I think it´s more a question of your own definition… So, to me (and I´ve been into this stuff since the early 1990´s) techno first of all means the entire bandwith of electronic music that developed until now – may it be tech house, trance, goa, acid or schranz and so on. Of course, if you´re more into details, you can devide the techno music into at least 20 different styles again, and decide that “techno” as you understand it is only the pure classic detroit stuff or whatever you like – but again, that´s a matter of your own definition and taste.
@ topic: I just thought of good electronic music (if you prefer that term) which I like hearing when I play TF2 for fun or, even better, a race game – that´s what I ended up posting, even if some of it may not match your definition of techno…
But then again, I look at the other posts and feel pretty comfortable =)
Yeah I realise that, the reason I quoted that part was because many people seem to use techno as another word for electronic music of any variety. To me this is like calling all guitar music metal.

That would have been useful for introducing my friend to edm a few months ago, it’s not perfect but it kinda gives a rough idea of the various genres and sub-genres and how they relate to each other.

What Admirable posted was pure techno. A great deal of maximalism through minimalism, repetition, and slow evolution. 4×4 stomping kickdrums accompanied by syncopated percussionist elements. Weird sound effects that loop on the off-beat. Melodies and harmonics are a merely optional sidestory.

Of course the exact definitions and boundaries of a genre are vague and arbitrary. This is a good thing, because music should be about breaking boundaries and genre names should be used as descriptors, not prescriptors. But there’s a consensus-based line to be drawn where a song really stops to belong to a certain genre or not. Hardstyle, trance, goa and acid are not techno.
Ishkur’s guide is pretty accurate but doesn’t cover all styles and hasn’t been updated to include all new hybrid styles. Where is dubstep, wonky, future dub, skweee, etc etc? The whole new electro/techno fusion wave hasn’t been included either. It used to be of great guidance to me about 6 years ago or so though.
If you want to talk about how the different genres evolved out one another, and how one genre is related to the other, I think Simon Reynolds’ theory of the “Hardcore Continuüm” is the most accurate and meaningful. Read about it here: http://www.thewire.co.uk/details/contributors/?contributor=51
I never game with music in the background btw, unless it’s one of those rare occasions where I’m completely mashed and go backburner pyro on a random pub. I don’t like music as sound-wallpaper. I’d rather listen to it with full attention :)

That´s exactly the opposite of how I and many others see it. It´s your personal definition, but if you – just to stay on that route – look it up at wiki under “goa music” for example, they for example see goa as a part of trance (which is arguable, of course) and trance again as a subform of techno. And so, everyone else might find some different definitions and other sources that fit their own point of view.
But simply stating that trance, goa and acid are no techno is just wrong imo.
I´m not arguing with what you said about music being supposed to break boundaries etc., and I know you can´t fit every single track in a certain scheme, declare it´s belonging to only one certain style and nothing else. And I agree with a lot of other things written there. I´m just saying, it´s a question of your own definition of the word “techno” – either as one certain part of electronic music, apart from acid, electronica, goa, trance and all the others – or actually more as a general description for an entire kind of music with many subforms, a generic term or superordinate concept; that was what I actually referred to.
To the author of the topic, in case you´re confused by now or wondering where the music posts are while some freaks are discussing something you never were interested in – maybe just tell the crowd what you like yourself, and people might be able to suggest more stuff you might like as well once they know your taste…
Look, I’m not saying you are “wrong”. If you see a bike, and you call it a “car”, that’s your right. Language is ever-evolving and there is no right and wrong. But to call all forms of electronic dance music “techno” is a very common misconception. All the electronic dance music genres originated from UK hardcore and rave, which is sometimes also referred to as techno. I think the misconception comes from that.
When you call goa techno, maybe your friends know what you mean. But if I go to a venue and the flyer says “techno”, and upon entrance it turns out to be a goa trance night, then I will ask my money back. That’s what I meant with “consensus”. General concensus, as far as I know, doesn’t consider trance to be techno. Even Ishkur’s guide lists them both as seperate fundamental genres. There are inherent differences to the musical aspects of the genres which make them very different. Of course you are free to differentiate from the general concensus; I just wonder if it’s any use.

The mix-cds Dubstep Allstars Vol. 2 to 4 encompass what for me are the classics of dubstep. As to new school dubstep, you can’t beat Appleblim’s Dubstep Allstars 6. All the cd’s in that series are ace though! Cause like most electronic dance music, tunes are best listened to in a good mix.
But most people seem to be into the bangerstep/ drunkstep/epicstep/brostep/anthemstep like Rusko on the one side and Borgore on the other side. Kinda boring to me, but that’s what tastes are for.

I just felt the topic title was a misnomer :)
That wikipedia article wasn’t bad, if you listen to half of the artists mentioned you will be getting a good grasp of “techno” as I understood it and experienced it.
It is still important to try and define genres and styles so we can see where we have come from and how music evolves and references itself.
