Edit more doesn’t always mean slap on effects, change the speed of the footage eg. fast up untill the explosion then slow mo the gib, nice clean transitions, colour correction. Some of the effects aren’t bad, just try and avoid ones that make the action unviewable.

destructo

nice movie
– too much effects (((((((((((:

I agree, not one frag is unedited. Good shots, nice vid

less is more sometimes when it comes to editing, i simple dip to black would have been FAR more effective than some of the effects used there. hurt my eyes a little xx

nice frags and music choice, too bad about youtube but still a very good frag movie to add to the collection

WiK?

Some sweet shots, but yeah totally over-edited : p. I remember one shot was just a spiralling ripple of mess in which nothing could be made head nor tail of.

Still a good watch though, would hardly say it “ruined” the movie. Nice stuff mineral : ).

I have to agree with the general consensus here.
The editing is a little off!

The idea of a good edit is that it highlights and complements the content rather than obstructs it.

Also there is no consistency in the effects and transitions used, it’s sort of like you went through the menu and tried to use every effect :D

Less is more!
Try using more subtle effects like music sync or just highlighting key frags.
Transitions only really need to be used between different “sections” (e.g you might divide your frags between certain maps or certain types of kill)
Focus your editing skills on the intro and outro which doesn’t necessarily have to be long or flashy, and leave the content of the movie relatively untouched.

Good work though man, I think I definitely saw some good content in there!

P.S. Turn off Steam Community if using FRAPS or whatever ;)

Great frags but yes, too many effects – some of the effects were used when you were about to make a good shot, and then I can barely see whether you are on the same map again :PP

nice vid tho, look forward to more :)

Uhm, I wouldn’t say the movie had too many effects… they were just made very poorly. Good effects don’t block your view from the actual action and they should be timed so that they fit the music and/or action on screen. It’s generally a bad idea to add effects affecting the whole screen unless it’s a transition from one scene to another. Color or brightness changes are ok too if you time them with the music, for example a flash when you gib someone timed with a bass beat. Now all these color changes, twirls and waves served no other purpose than distracting the viewers from the action.

Another thing which you could improve is the frame rate which you used to record the video. I watched the stream version so the jerky video might be caused because of that as well but it looks like you used something like 30fps to capture this. Even the normal speed scenes are not smooth at all and especially when you used slow motion it became obvious. Ideally you’ll want to capture the video at 100-200 frames per second and then convert it to 25-30fps later. Of course it will take longer to record clips with high fps and the initial lossless videos you’ll get will be much bigger than what they would be in 30fps but this way you’ll get a lot smoother end result and you can even use slow motion without the player models warping like they’d have 50% packet loss.

Own-age has some really nice tutorials for making game movies: http://own-age.com/forum/
I would recommend checking out the basic tips http://own-age.com/forum/threads/7613 and image quality tutorial http://www.own-age.com/forum/thread.aspx?id=5883&page=1 (you’ll probably want to skip the xvid settings part and go for x264 instead, http://own-age.com/forum/threads/37411 works so much better for game movies).

An example for the kind of editing and effects I would like to see http://www.own-age.com/vids/video.aspx?id=6525 All the action is clearly visible and the effects fit the video perfectly :)
