TF2 Framerate drops

System specs:
i7 950 3,2 Ghz
HD6870
6GB 1600Mhz RAM
As of a few days my framerate drops. I have it capped at 120, which was never a problem, but now it drops to 60 or even 30 when I am in crowded/spammy areas. I know this is some extra stress for the GPU, but the point is, it does not change a thing when I put all tf2 graphic settings to as low as possible. So I suspect the CPU. What do you think and how do you think I should fix it?

your pc with those specs should shit all over tf2 .
not helpful just thought id mention it :p
I bet it was one of your test subjects, manipulating some connection. Try floating your system with neurotoxins.
edit: but seriously, check if there’s nothing CPU hungry running in the background.

Same here, but also depends on the map.
For example in badlands it’s always 120 but in warmfront middle it riches 80.
Dx 9 chris cfg.
CPU Intel Core 2 Quad @ 2,83 GHz
RAM 4GB DDR2
Gigabyte nVIDIA GTX 460 1GB OC
Windows 7 64 bits

thats not the same, u actually dont have good enough cpu
anyway, there was some ati thread where ppl were whining about exactly same problem, so i suspect its the ati drivers
although, you should always check usual suspects for such fps lags: 1) antivirus 2) mumble overlay 3) trying running on single core (mat_queue_mode -2)
same for me
windows 7 x64
8GB RAM DDR2
Intel Q8400 @ 3 Ghz
nVIDIA GTX 470
and highfps config

I thought that Quad core cpu is enough for ye olde good tf2.
Also, I’ve got fps drops on my E8400 @ 4ghz like in spam areas and especially on freight’s mid. And just few month ago all was good for me with this config. Can’t even pretend what’s happening there.

quad core doesnt mean anything since tf2 uses two cores
and im just saying that such 2.8ghz-ish 45nm cpu’s isnt enough for decent fps on w7. on xp, no problem
people love configs.
Intel i7 860
6 GB ddr3 ram
nvidia GTX 460
windows 7 64-bit.
and still using configs ;) like no bodies and gibs or sprays.
You dont want any fps drops at all. just use config for save
Windows 7 64-bit.
And I am sure my pc is perfectly able to run TF2, as it has always been able to (until now)
(And I just like the eye candy :P)

Don’t know about the ATI drivers, I just installed the most recent ones (11.4)
1. AV was turned off (It’s McAfee btw).
2. It usually happens in pubs, so no mumble.
3. Single core does not affect it or makes it worse very slightly.
As far as I can see through the task manager my cpu load is always under 50% when playing the fps drops occur. And since lowering the ingame settings does not affect it either… Could it be network related or something similar?

I have, I could try running tf2 without them, but I do not think this will solve the problem because tf2 has worked just fine in the past with the old driver. I recently updated my driver after I got framerate issues on several maps. This are usually pub maps (Hoodoo/gorge/goldrush/badwater).
