better than Korean’s ;;’ who’s apperantly crying

It’s easier to write one symbol “)” instead of “:)” . When people try to express their simple emotions like “LOL” they usually write “)))” because the meaning of those is still clear to everyone. So why bother and write some additional “:” ?

However, if there’s more than three of those “)”, it’s usually annoying.

copy and paste “:” then if you dont have it on your keyboard.
