So when someone who happens to use this forum gets their account stolen , thats considered a new hacking wave?

First , it’s not hacking if you open a link yourself , and enter the account details yourself. It’s called “youre either 11 or you bought your pc yesterday”

And second , I get these kind of messages at the very least 4-5 times a month , so it’s not like someone suddenly started hacking.

Right you silly people.

To stop the “phishers” from modifying your account password or email address set up email verification immediately. Here’s the link to the steam kb article that explains how to do it. https://support.steampowered.com/kb_article.php?ref=5151-RUAS-1543

tl dr; Steam will send an email to “your” verified email address to confirm that you want to change your login details before actually changing them.

Please note this is a good thing.

I did this just yesterday. It now won’t actually let you buy Steam games until you do this, so I also recommend you do.

I remember this happened to me, except it wasn’t a random person who added me and did it, it was someone on my friends list who was hacked and then I happened to message him about something TF2 related and he sent me a link to the Steam forums.

That was just like…great luck for the hacker, hacked my friend who happened to get messaged about a TF2 update and he must have licked his lips. Though being a couple years back, I wasn’t exactly prepared for a hacker either, not like now. Still can happen to anyone in the right set of circumstances.

I opened a link, saw the URL was fake, closed it.

Logged into Steam next day, I got told that someone had been on my account…
