What improvements with upgrading GPU only?

Not sure if anyone here would be interested, but I’ll post it anyway. I bought myself a new GPU this week and slotted it into my machine as the only upgrade.

I ran a few FPS benchmarks with a few games that have one in-built and did some TF2 benches using FRAPS too. The results were a little bit interesting. For the full details see here

Got a q8200 running at 2.33, 4 GB of RAM in Vista 32 bit..(so yeah, 4 GIG DAMN YOU!) and the below GPU’s. Monitor is 1440 x 900.

New card:

GTX 560Ti Ultra Charged 2GB
Manufacturing process: 40 nm
Cores: 384
Core Clock: 910 MHz
Shader Clock: 1820 MHz
Memory: 2GB
Memory Bit Rate: 256 Bit
Memory Type: GDDR5
Memory Clock: 4008 MHz

Old card:

GeForce 9800GT:
CUDA Cores 112
Graphics Clock (MHz) 600 MHz
Processor Clock (MHz) 1500 MHz
Texture Fill Rate (billion/sec) 33.6
Memory Clock (MHz) 900
Standard Memory Config 512 MB
Memory Interface Width 256-bit
Memory Bandwidth (GB/sec) 57.6

Results:

Resident Evil 5:

Old card:
Variable: 49.6 This is measured during simulated gameplay
Fixed: 45.9 This is a fixed scene

New card:
Variable: 99.6
Fixed: 58.1

Percentage improvement on the variable test = [(58.1/45.90 -1] x 100 = 26.58
Percentage improvement on the fixed test = [(99.6/49.6) -1] x 100 = 100.8

Overall percentage improvement = (26.58 + 100.8 ) / 2 = 63.69%

Total War Shogun 2

Old card:
Benchmark game settings: 28.38

New card:
Benchmark game settings: 49.2

Overall percentage improvement = [(49.2/28.38] -1] x 100 = 73.36%

World In Conflict

Old card:
Benchmark: Min. 15 Max. 54 Average: 30

New card:
Benchmark: Min. 13 Max. 94 Average: 40

Overall percentage improvement = 33.33%

Team Fortress 2

Measured with FRAPS FPS counter watching the same demo with both cards. 7 measurements taken, best and worst discarded.

Old card:
Min Max Avg
66 287 145.7
0 286 80.25
72 299 158.9
0 220 120
0 298 99.2
64 180 124.7
77 267 131

Average of the average is 124

New card:
Min Max Avg
61 256 136.4
62 253 123.4
72 267 137.6
67 298 147.9
70 243 122.8
56 194 120
55 218 123.2

Average of the average is 128.68

So not a single “0FPS” moment, but very little improvement overall.

Overall percentage improvement = [(128.68/124) -1] x 100 = 3.78%

So the grand total improvement over the 4 games and 5 tests ran is…..

(63.69 + 73.36 + 33.33 + 3.78) / 4

which equals……..

*** 43.54% ***

So yeah, dont expect any massive improvements in TF2 with a new shiny GPU as your only upgrade.

You neglected to mention the config you are using. Based on those numbers, I’m going to assume it’s either Chris Dx9frames or just default settings. I promise if you were to upgrade to a new i5 or i7, you’re FPS would be at least doubled. With your old card, you’re CPU was very slightly bottlenecked by the graphics card, now you have a great graphics card that is horrifically CPU limited.

Not using any kinda config, when I go shiny I wanna be shiny!

Most of the settings were set below the recomended levels though, mostly low/off

CPU bottleneck is next upgrade, but will need a new MoBo to take advantage of a decent processor too I would think. MoBo/CPU combo is bit poo atm.

I been thinking of upgrading my Graphics Card also but not having much clue on how it works and if it will benefit my performance I am always skeptical about spending money.

i was gonna guess 10% (before reading that u already posted it) but seems about right ;]

you cant say dont upgrade gpu tho, if you would have new and shiny sandybridge your improvement would go off the charts

I don’t think I will ever get why people are so cheap about a Windows License.

What is it like 100€?

You will be using it almost every day of the year for about 3 years, maybe even longer.

Let’s assume you will be using the lincense for 3 years, 300days a year and like 2h avg on each day.

That’s 1800hours total windows usage, so you will be paying 0.05€ per hour

more stupid calculations based on the games on your profile (I’ll use current prices, you probably paid double):

Brink: 1€ / h
CoD:BO: 3€ / h
CoD:MW2: 0.60€ / h
CoD:MW3: 8.50€ / h

but windows is not multiplayer game, its single player – so just pirate it!

It’s not so much your gpu not boosting tf2, it’s more that the bottleneck lies elsewhere. Upgrade your cpu (or use less Vista :D) and then try both gpu’s again and you’ll probably see a bigger difference. Still won’t be much as tf2 likes your cpu more than it likes your gpu, but yea.

TF2, unlike the other source games, is based on a horrible engine(or revision of it w/e), and so it takes most of the resources from the CPU, not the GPU.

And that is why I got a 2500k instead of upgrading my gtx260
