Just so you people using -dxlevel xx in your launch options know, your game takes twice as long to load because it first resets the entire games settings, then changes the resolution, then applies your graphics settings from your configs/autoexecs

What you should do is launch it once with -dxlevel, fix settings, exit game, remove it and have your regular launch options. If your game still resets dxlevel, check your configs/autoexec.

“Twice as long to load”? That’s not factual at all. Please don’t spout false information.

Fine

longer than it would if it didn’t reset settings and change resolution everytime.

-dxlevel 80 -full -w 1600 -h 900 -nojoy -novid -console -freq 60 -heapsize 2097152 -high +mat_antialias 1 -32bit

Question: I have the nVidia GeForce GTS 250, would I be better off on dxlevel 95?

wat is heapsize and freq

Heapsize: the amount of memory in mb the game is allowed to use.
Fre: refresh rate

It doesn’t ‘reset settings and change resolution everytime’. If you knew the way that Source games initialised, you’d know why what you just said is factually incorrect.

And both are pointless and/or bad. Don’t perpetuate the use of them.

#1 – Heapsize was removed from the OB engine. Good riddance, it was a load of crap that people shouldn’t have used — they only did because for some reason m0re misguidedly included it in his configs. The game isn’t so dumb that it doesn’t know better what heapsize to use than the user does who is blindly putting silly numbers like “half your ram” in. And for the record heap size is not memory size. It’s heap size.
#2 – The frequency used is, by default, the same as used at the desktop. Don’t fuck with it, or if Valve removes the restriction to allow -freq to change frequency outside of range some day, a lot of people around here will end up with broken monitors because they entered the thing without understanding what the fuck it does.

I’m sick of people perpetuating these shitty launch options. It’s even worse than shitty Gentoo ricers with their fucking CFLAGS.
