I don’t know if there already is a thread like this, so making this just in case.
So the question here is:
How useful are mentors? Do they actually help you become better quicker or is it just a waste of time to search for a mentor?
Everyone’s opinion is welcome.

Cheers.

-from own experience a mentor is only as good/useful as the mentee
-i prolly mentored about 15 people and most of them never got better because they don’t realize that they have to think themselves and also have to put in the hours themselves (but when they add you they are all like yeye i am so keen i play this game 24/7 blablabla)
-mentors helped me a lotabout 3-4 years ago but i also did a shitton of work myself
– shoutout to alba the only player i mentored that actually got into prem
– the rest was 2 weak

thats it, you have to make sure its still you who is playing, even if you are mentored.
he can help you to figure out some mistakes and tell you some “tricks” what you can do to avoid some things in certain situations.
but its all about you to break your bad habits.

+1 to that, mentors only show you small mistakes and the general way of doing things, the bulk of the work should be done by you, be it through watching your own demos, watching other people’s demos and playing. Despite popular belief, playing does help :)

Phnx

if you have mistakes that you do repeatedly and you don’t know how to avoid them you might need a mentor, if you want to understand a game style of someone, you’ll have to not only watch their povs, but also understand their thought process, so you won’t end up in a situation where you have no idea what to do.

Team mentors are 10 times as useful as individual mentors.

Largely it depends how useful they are. Fish was enormously helpful in our newbie group. I imagine anyone looking for a mentor is capable of learning.

always depends on your effort onto it, in my case it did actually help i just ended up making my own stupid style afterall and stay with the ones I like to play with, but its all about your willingness to learn, shoutout to turbomonkey u sexy fag

That depends a LOT on both the mentor and the mentee as mentioned before. Some mentors may not have the time and/or the ability to teach effectively and mentees might not listen to the advice or not make an attempt to change what their doing.

I’m being mentored by Admirable right now but the poor guy is super busy all the time and I’m probably not the easiest person to teach something but I do my best :)

mentors are useful for sure in case u need to help with your game sense or positioning with your team, but also a lot of work u need to do by yourself:)

Team Colonslash had Academy projects a few times so far, and it’s always easier to mentor the whole team and see the whole picture than just try with one player and see how far you go. For example, you can’t fully mentor a pocket without seeing his Medic and what mistakes THEY do together.

To answer your question – they are very useful. I was lucky enough to get some help from Fish, an older player with a lot of insight, so keep trying to find a mentor that fits your glove.

think of it like you’re riding a bycicle and fell down. the mentor helps you get up, tells you what you did wrong and gives some tips and a lil push so you can ride it again. but at the end of the day it’s YOU who’s driving the bycicle. it’s about you to keep it steady and keep going forward until you reach that Prem medal of sweetness. but if you dont listen to him and repeat you’re mistakes, you will just fell down again.

+Shoutout for Solitude for mentoring me. He helped me so much and really cared when i was new to pyro and because of that im now LFT d3 :)

I’ve tried to mentor people but I’m not a good teacher but from a mentee’s perpective there is a few things i want to say. Be keen to learn and be ready to recieve feedback and critisism. I assume this has been said already but whatever :)
