adios

a mentor is as useful as you let him be, for example your school teacher tries to teach you but it depends on you if you actually retain the information if u dont give a fuck, dont do ur homework and dont study: ull be shit. with mentors its the same, theres only so much a mentor can do the rest is up to you, u can just do a 1 hour mentoring session and hope for magic. just like in school, u have to do most of the work

You can’t compare teachers to mentors. TF2 is a skill you develop while playing, much like driving a car. Someone can tell you how to drive a car, but that doesn’t mean you can properly drive one. And much like learning how to drive a car, it just takes practice and most things (should) come natural the more you drive a car.

I feel TF2 is the same way, and that mentoring isn’t very helpful in that regard, at least not at player level. Team level might be better, but I don’t think people can really change. A team either works (or it’s doing poorly, but there is “potential), or doesn’t, but I don’t think you can make a bad team with bad teamwork a good team with good teamwork. You can improve DM, but I think game sense tends to stagnate after a while, you either have it by then, or you don’t.

If you have game sense in general, you’ll quickly improve tactics wise on most classes you’ll main (by playing and watching some demos), and you won’t need a mentor.

tl;dr: No, mentors aren’t very helpful, better off teaching yourself by playing and watching some demos.

Usually when ppl adds me for sniper tips, I tell them to play orangex3 until they can kill anyone that steps out of the enemy spawn, mostly no one even tries. For some few I have said stop crouch+jumping and concentrate on aiming when they are training, but some just doesnt want to or doesnt understand why. Kinda hard to mentor class that is roughly about 90% aim and 10% on lines, spots, brains.

Seems that some people just dont have the time or the motivation to make mentor&mentoree thing work.
