Season 11 Extravaganza, Highlander Tiebreakers
January 9, 2012
Season 11
Signups are open! for our 11th glorious season of 6v6!
Teams signing up should specify which division they would prefer to be placed in using the handy dropdown menu (now with added “prem”).
Teams requesting any division higher than 6 should be prepared to provide evidence to support their ability, whether it’s a long-standing pedigree or a boatful of screenshots from recent results. Such boats should be uploaded to one place like imgur, and the link should be sent in an email to staff@etf2l.org, along with details of who you are and what division you are requesting.
Map Poll
Yesterday we opened the map vote for Season 11. The feedback we received had many cries for turbine and viaduct to have been in the poll, so after receiving 1,024 votes we have closed the poll and had a discussion. The following poll is the result. We have eliminated the bottom 3 maps from the previous poll (Obscure_final, Croissant and Bazillion) and replaced them with koth_pro_viaduct_rc3 and ctf_turbine_pro_rc1. Like last time, please vote for the maps you would like to see in Season 11.
Please note: Voters do not need to pick 6 maps, 6 is just the maximum. If for example you only want to vote for 4 maps, pick those 4 and submit your vote. The final map pool will, however, contain 6 maps.
Season 11 Maps! Choose a maximum of 6 maps you'd like to see in Season 11
Total Voters: 1,195
Turbine_pro rules proposal:
“ESL rules” – Best of 3 rounds, timelimit 10, capturelimit 5. Rounds ending without a clear winner are ignored.
Pro_viaduct rules proposal:
Best of 5 (winlimit 3), timelimit 0.
Schedule
- Map pool finalised: Thursday (at the latest)
- Signups open: Now!
- Signups close: Sunday, January 15 (Waiting list will still be open for signups)
- Provisional Divisions out: Next week
- Week 1 start: January 22nd
Playoffs
Playoffs will be held between March 18th and March 31st. Write it down, cancel all other engagements, consider yourselves notified.

Rule Changes
We’re working on a number of minor improvements to our league rules. These will be explained in detail in a separate post to come soon.
Highlander Tiebreakers
Our first Highlander Season has finished, which brings us to the tiebreaker games. Teams that are tied on points for first place need to play a best-of-three maps match to determine who is to be promoted from their respective divisions. Maps should be chosen from the Season 1 Map Pool.
The following Highlander matches must be played in the next 2 weeks:
- Division 4F
- Division 5C
- Division 5E
- Division 6B
- Division 6D
- Division 6E

January 10th, 2012 at 10:53
I assume you have a way to see how many maps each individual has voted for? Because it would be rather pointless to allow voting for less than 6 maps (or any other fixed amount) if you’re gonna take the top six voted for anyway. Not voting for a map usually means you don’t wanna play it. It does not mean you don’t care if you play it or not.
January 10th, 2012 at 11:14
@Daniel: The map pool will consist of 6 maps. Feedback on that amount has been good and we have no intention to change it.
edit: But yes, we can see how many players voted for how many maps.

They removed Croissant, etc because they had the least amount of votes you whiners. A map pool with 3cp, koth, ctf and 5cp is a pool with great variety.

January 10th, 2012 at 12:04
@Canfo: So voting for less than six maps is stupid, unless you hate all the maps you didn’t vote for equally?

January 10th, 2012 at 15:45
Y U NO PUT OBSCURE_FINAL? D:
January 10th, 2012 at 15:54
Decerto i’m not a little kid and i do not need to “get over myself” but viaduct has proven to not work in america several times now, turbine just keeps not working for the seasons it’s been in any leagues and i sure as hell don’t understand why freight is suddenly being reconsidered.
But as you know they’d rather play proven broken maps than any map i make, for the sake of variety since croissant would apparently bring no more variety than a broken koth map which is basically just a 1cp 5cp with biased spawntimes. A ctf which plays the same as a 2cp map would since there’s no way to stop the flag once you get it. And freight which is just objectively bad.
Also this is my opinion it won’t change anything so there’s no need to start insulting me let me have my own little opinion at least i have that.

January 10th, 2012 at 11:14
@Daniel: The map pool will consist of 6 maps. Feedback on that amount has been good and we have no intention to change it.”
I forgot to create a thread about it but 6 maps is actually annoying for playoff games since you can’t do the classic map elimination.
eg: (with 7 maps in the map pool)
team 1 eliminates map A
team 2 eliminates map B
team 2 eliminates map C
team 1 eliminates map D
Team 1 picks map E
Team 2 picks map F
Map G is the decider map.
Now, with 6 maps, you’ll need to create a new rule to decide which map will be decider.
My rule suggestion would be: coinflip between map C and D (since clearly neither team 1 or 2 wants to play map A and B as they were eliminated first).
January 10th, 2012 at 16:52
Don’t get me wrong, I would love to see at least bazillion in the poll, I also said it was weird that they removed your other maps. You just come off as a little arrogant, ‘why did you remove two of my three maps, now I only have one of the most successful custom maps left’.
And as far as turbine goes, how is it not working? If you people still are using the “CTF is dead in tf2″ thread as argument then I highly disagree with you. The statements in that “declaration” are based upon the most ridiculous arguments. You have to understand that CTF differs from CP, because it’s a fucking different gamemode. It’s not supposed to be played in the same way.

We’ve been playing turbine for so long it doesn’t play any different than it would if you would put a cp instead of a flag. that’s the point.
ctf doesn’t work because tf2 doesn’t have the movement or the speed for it. I’ve talked about this numerous times already and turbine is just a stale stale map to add to that square with flat long hallways.
January 10th, 2012 at 17:07
@ Ghostface What’s wrong with having it in the map pool anyway? It’s not going to harm anything
January 10th, 2012 at 18:00
ctf_tubine has been played three times in ETF2L as far as I can tell, quite early as well, and _pro once. Of course, the map plays a big part and I do agree that in order to play ctf you need a good set of rules, that will prevent matches from going on and on.
I’d still like to say that the argument that TF2 doesn’t have sufficient speed for ctf is utter bullshit. Who said ctf has to be fast paced? Why has it got to be fast paced? What defines fast paced? Are you even playing it right? Why are you comparing TF2′s CTF to other games CTF when it isn’t even the same game?
January 10th, 2012 at 18:09
Look decerto having a dynamic objective is fine as long as you can somehow gain speed, tf2 doesn’t allow for that without damaging yourself. Ctf is heavily based on the execution of gaining speed by advanced movement.
In tf2 this doesn’t exist so basically what you get is whoever takes the flag out of the turtlehole that is turbine has the point and that will be decided in 2 ways either the fight on middle or the fight in the hole. There’s no dynamic between that so you might aswel put a cp in the hole and call it a day, it would play better too since midfights would be “fair” each time you reset the round after a cp cap.
January 10th, 2012 at 18:20
My name isn’t decerto.
I still ask the question, who said that? Where does that even come from?
You’re saying ctf would be playing fine if, lets say, bhop was possible in TF2? The main issue according to you seem to be that whoever takes the intel, basically scores a point. I don’t think it would help that much if the players were even faster and harder to catch. And why the fuck is it so god damned difficult to adapt to other game mechanics? It really isn’t.
I agree that CTF at this moment, isn’t as good as we can achieve, but I am saying it isn’t impossible.
January 10th, 2012 at 19:25
Canfo: At least make it clear that there will be 6 different maps in the final pool, regardless of how many maps people vote for.
I only voted for the 3 I really like, but now that I’m aware that there will be six maps, I regret that I didn’t put in votes for 3 other maps I didn’t dislike that much – just to “ensure” maps I really hate won’t end up in the pool.
January 10th, 2012 at 19:50
Now, what if the “new” added maps, have less votes than the ones previously removed?
How will you decide that? Surely not by saying people pityvoted on them the first time around?

January 12th, 2012 at 02:29
Arnold at the end of the day, it was the publics decision (I actually voted for it) but maybe it needed some more marketing? I know lots of people who have never played the map therfore they have not voted for it.
I’m sure once more people play it, they will come to love it – it just takes time for the community to vote for a new map unless its forced upon by the admins.

@Kop
I’m not saying etf2l doesn’t give customs any chances, on the contrary it’s just the public that doesn’t.
@lolage that would be one of the biggest factors and also why a public vote isn’t really the best way to choose maps.
January 13th, 2012 at 11:49
@ arnold, i also voted crossaint.
