any diamond players up for practising add me on steam or battlenet @ ElRaymond.323 i play protoss, but want to learn other races as well. id say terran is my weakest race.. too boring to learn :)

the thing i love about starcraft is the well mannered community and everyone in it is willing to help others improve, not like fps where people seem to have derpvision.

Edit: will participate in the next one if it’s going to carry on, need to start doing tourneys.. will probably help me improve

Honestly, the best way to improve is to “cheese” your way up to ~Plat/Diamond level. Just refine one build until you can do a strong push at X time with X units every single game. Once you’re there, you will have a much easier time learning how to macro and think about strategy.

e.g. Pre-patch 4wg push with 6 stalkers 1 zealot at their ramp on 5:45 every single game.

hmmm, but it won’t be satisfying to cheese all like that all the way to higher rankings (even though it will be 5x harder for me to get out bronze because of inactivity and cba quits). :(

i love you

also, hz, what you said is precisely what I think. I prefer to lose games if they outmacro me, but not if they do a half-assed build while I try to go into a macro game, only to get a flood of units at my doorstep which I scouted but can’t do shit anymore. I keep thinking that cheesing is such an unsportmanly way to win :(

Although, granted, i only do a 7rax cheese when I feel totally bored and/or pissed off at life. But never twice or more in a row.

I actually find the best way to improve is to refine a single build and keep adapting it… forever.

It’s a bit like TF2 for me in that sense. On most maps, I always take the same route to the mid fight. At the start I would get owned, but you soon learn the counters and timing to everything. On granary as a scout, when you run down the left at the start, you know if their demoman has gone left or right, while being completely blind, you also know the timing of an enemy scout that comes down your left. You know that if you don’t see someone in a certain position, you know what you can and can’t do from there.

In SC, let’s say, as Terran. I started opening with 2 rax against all races. With a scout, and trial and error, I learnt which builds I could pressure with my opening marines, and which builds I should cut the early loss and start playing more standard. Because it was always the same for me, I could make a note of what I did when I won a game, and what I did wrong when I lost a game. In the next game, if I lost, I would do something different, if my opponent was doing the same thing as last time.

Ultimately this might result in not going 2 barracks in the first place, but that decision would have to be based off of something I’ve seen, and lost against, and know a better counter to the situation.

Pick a resonably standard build, scout a lot, and go by your previous successes until you know how to instantly react to something you see. If you can’t scout… make a lot of units :P

This works unless you’re Zerg, in which case you need to always counter.

Same goes for protoss to a certain extent earlygame

Well that’s the point of it though. I guess with zerg, the moment when you need to deviate from your standard play might come earlier in the game, but the principle still stands.

For example, you might decide that your standard play will be a 12 pool, 1 gas, queen + ling speed.

The point I was trying to make, is that if you are doing the same build, then you will learn what your opponent is doing much better. You will learn that if you see 10 marines by the time you have your first roach pop out, they must have X number of barracks. You can then from experience, work out what your reaction to that should be.

If you are mixing up your own builds. E.g. 9 pool, 12 pool, 14 hatch etc.. Then while you might know the timings of the enemies units, how you react to it will have to be based on what you can afford at the time. I feel it’s better to allready know in advance what you can afford (based on how far along in your build you are), and have a tried and tested counter to it.

In any strategy, you’re pretty much either attacking on defending. By opening up with the same build each game, it becomes very easy to work out which of these you should be doing, as well as if it is possible to actually do so, simply because you know what you will have at set points in the game.

But there is already a solid base of knowledge within the community, provided by players who are SIGNIFICIANTLY better at the game, so I don’t see what the point in trying to work out your own builds is until you can realistically call yourself like top 500 in the world.

Arx isn’t talking about making your own builds, he is saying that you should start out with the same opening every game to get a good hang of the timings.
