just out of interest nvidia users how many of you have power management mode set to adaptive?

Same problem here. Validated + defragged TF2
@ ATI HD4850
I’m also on an HD4850 and I get this issue.
I’m getting a newer video card soon, so I’ll have to see if the problem remains

Fixed it by updating fps config. Derp.
Okay, so apparently freezes were caused by shitty internet connection at least for me.
Here is the scenario: I have these epic freezes here and there -> I get my computer to different house and have different internet connection -> no freezes, I mean none.

So I sat down one day and tried to identify what HADN’T changed since the problem started, and found only 1 thing – my graphics card. I didn’t think that was the issue, because as I said the problem was only in TF2, but the card was a few years old (a GTX285) and the only component I hadn’t replaced in a recent rebuild, so I bought a new card, and wham, freezes stopped. Not had a single one in the 4-5 months since then.
That’s drastic as fuck :D Although I can’t explain why it was okay with a new graphics card I find it hard to believe the graphics cards are the culprit considering the amount of people I know who suffer from this problem. You forgot the biggest thing thats changed during this time; the game.
For a solid 6-8months since a certain update every server I connected to I timed out from after 10-30sec and wasn’t able to rejoin as I got the error “STEAM VALIDATION REJECTED” (tried everything suggested in the steam forums and http://etf2l.org/forum/general/topic-12368). I had to join 2/3 random servers and wait to time out just to get and remain on the server I want to play in every time I loaded the game.. how I never sacked it off as a bad job and continued playing I’ll never know. So yeah, sometime in the last 4 – 6 weeks in one of the many updates the games received this problem was fixed/stopped. It was around this time I started to suffer from serious ingame freezes. If I’m honest TF2 has always run like a bag of turd for me, never been satisfied with it. However these freezes were now occurring 10x more frequent and lasted what felt like 10x longer, in reality I’m probably getting 1.5-2sec freezes.
There’s nothing but a bunch of old threads about the problem on the steam forums, which never find a solution or get resolved so I decided to try and do some digging on updates.
What I found was valve have been doing alot of game optimization for x64 OS’s in recent updates aka “Updated the localization files” and with me still using x86 XP I began to wonder if I should finally make the leap to w7 and if that would resolve some of my many game problems?! This is something I cba to start on atm as I’ll need a good couple of days to backup my stuff and I’m not really sure this would fix anything as I know alot other people getting freezes are on w7 or another modern x64 OS (at least more so than x86 xp=]) – although my freezes do seem to be more severe than the average Joes’.
A small victory I did win over VALVe was finding out if I used dxlevel 95 rather than; 80, 81 or 90 it would significantly reduce the frequency of the freezes and generally make the game run so much smoother.
Any more information people have on this issue would be greatly appreciated as it’s really putting me off playing and grinding ones gears. Perhaps Chris could do some research/testing on the matter?
