I got the Fiio E1 now. Does exactly what I was looking for: gives a lot of headroom and allows quieter recording to be played at a decent level (and less thd, because you ain’t driving it to its limits).

Just wait until you get the amp. you will find your new senns to go from good to better. I am waiting to see your comments then. It’s really nice to actually notice the difference between amp and non amp use on some headphones. Even my dad, who is so tone deaf, noticed the difference on my gear between amp and non amp play.
oh I have heard that I know something about these stuff and also told you so? :) I am happy that we have a new happy camper in the sennheiser camp :)
Might as well ask it here;
I’m basically looking for a DAC I can use with my laptop.
Doesn’t have to be amazing, would just like the sound quality to be on par with my desktop pc which has a Creative X-Fi Music in it. The phones are HD595s btw.
Any suggestions? :)
I must admit that I have never used DAC’s so I cannot help here. I can ask around on enthusiast forums tho.

How do you get sound out of your PC or CD player then? Ohohohohoh! :P
E-Mu 0404 USB is a really solid pick, albeit a bit pricey. It will outperform your X-Fi, and you can just unhook the usb and use it on your pc too if you want.
Otherwise maybe a model like a Zero DAC, which can be found on eBay. The general design/architecture is overall the same between models, but some have better opamps etc. It’s a DAC+headphone amp in 1 box. Example: http://cgi.ebay.co.uk/Zero-09-24BIT-192-DAC-HEAD-AMP-USB-OPA627-NEW-VERSION-/140530623591?pt=LH_DefaultDomain_0&hash=item20b8472467#ht_4998wt_1139 . Don’t be scared by the noname Chinese manufacturer; this thing outperforms many way more expensive DACs of well known brands. The used components are top quality.

oh, one search in there did it. Copied this stuff:
Pico Dac/Amp, and by assumption, the dac – great portable option. Simply great.
Musical Fidelity V-Dac – my current dac. Quite airy and detailed to me, but a simple in/out device, inputs on the front (or one end), RCA out on the back (or other end).
Cambridge Audio DacMagic – Just got it, and I like it. Better connectivity than the V-Dac, and it seems better synergy with my set-up.
None of these is over $500 new, I think. I bought all of them used, an excellent way to try DAcs.

Buying so kick ass soundcard what has all the plugins needed so no need for other devices in between. Simple and effective.

A soundcard IS a dac (+dsp) ;)
Picodac and V-dac might be a good choice for Anathema too. DACmagic is a great device, but it’s quite pricey and also over-specced for the rest of the gear.

<3 my Zero. Had it for 3-4 years and it's still going strong.
Koss KSC75 Headphones, yes they are cheap but the sound is really good for such a pair of portable/open phones, jays have a nice line but you should stay away from jays one they need a ton of equalizing to get it sounding just about right.
Sennheisers px 100 or 200 are also nice (but the shape is meh) and the cx line also have good products, i can say the cx 400 sound amazing, but ive read ppl complaning about some of the left or right side going mute.

+1
Best ever. Been using my $15 KSC75 phones for 4 years now. Perfect quality.
Hey guys, thanks for the replies.
Namu’s suggestions are a bit too pricey, since all of them cost a lot more than my headphones themselves did :D
I must admit I’m a bit wary of the Zero one; I’m sure the quality is great, but what about warranty if it’s faulty etc. Been quite unlucky recently with ordering stuff over the internet. :)
The E-Mu one looks great, but it seems to require an external power source. That’s not a huge deal, but is rather annoying as I’m already starved for wall sockets both at uni and at home, and also makes it slightly less portable.
Will definitely have to consider that one though.
Thanks!
