if you have root you normally start installing custom roms or kernels or whatever is custom and then the system gets instable.
if you want a phone that just works then dont root and let everything stock.
if you want to tinker around you root and install all the custom stuff but stability will go down :D
i have android since over 2 years now and my first device was a HTC Magic and it was totaly unstable after all the custom roms thats why i bought a desire HD and rooted it but dont stay @ stock ROM

what you mean by “test and optimise” – unless you are referring to people using custom roms. And updates – Really?
The problem here is that you *have to* install and change stuff. For example, have a look at my phone. It’s latest update available for it is android 2.1. New apps require 2.2 (to be installed on the SD card f.e), even the Google ones.
So you either have the option to be left out (when it comes down to new apps) or have something which doesn’t run fine (because it’s custom) or you just take a product which works like the ones from apple.

that’s exactly one of the phones I meant you may need to root so problems go away, i heard many have lag problems with it etc. Might be wrong though, but then again why are there so many topics on “galaxy S lag fix”…
iphones and ipads have to be jailbreaked before running good :D

I dont use Apple at all, but I was under the impression that Apple charge for major updates (compared to free for Android)? And not all iPhones are capable of getting the latest update anyway… and to get that update you need a new phone (similar to android)?
It’s a very weak argument in any case. Of course older phones get obsolete, that’s one thing that even Apple has demonstrated very well with yearly updates to their product range. As I said, I don’t use Apple at all, but the 3GS afaik introduced stronger graphics capabilities – so some games / apps that were designed for the 3GS wouldn’t run on the 3G. Similar story for 4 vs 3GS. It’s a fact of life.
Also, you left out an important option at the end: staying stock, and everything is working (HTC Desire).
Looks gay as fuck
the motorola xoom is a far superior device, anyone who chooses an ipad2 over it is a fool.
ipad = oversized ipod
xoom = tablet

the first build of software was laggy and needed a fix (which could be resolved with a simple download of an app on the market – no rooting required) this was fixed ages ago and no longer requires any rooting/modifications – i have a stock froyo galaxy s and it runs like a dream
ps. norris, check out this site http://forum.xda-developers.com/ there are some amazing developers on these forums and most phones already have the latest 2.3 update available from the developers

The adam tablet would be the best, if the build quality problems were resolved, although tablets are pretty gimmicky at the moment anyway.
