ok im building a new pc (well my brothers building it for me) and i dont have a clue what motherboard to get with these components as im clueless when it comes to boards.
the following is what ive decided on so far:
Gigabyte GTX 570 1280MB GDDR5 Dual DVI Mini HDMI PCI-E Graphics Card
Intel Core i7 950 3.06GHz Socket 1366 8MB Cache Retail Boxed Processor
Corsair 6GB (3x2GB) DDR3 1600MHz XMS3 Dominator Memory CL8(8-8-8–24) for i7 Motherboards
and maybe this motherboard?
Gigabyte GA-X58A-UD3R Intel X58 (Socket 1366) DDR3 PCI-Express Motherboard
Also what fans/coolers are good these days?
As you can tell i haven’t done this for a while :D
any other help/advice would be appreciated :)

as for cpu fan: Zalman CNPS 10X (either normal or extreme one, same deal just higher price)

yes, quiet stands only for the fact it has a jumper u can set to either run at high or low speeds

Interesting to see that there’s no mention of what they did to reduce input lag, seeing as that is propably the greatest concern for competitive gamers looking for a new lcd monitor.
As for the motherboard, unless you intend to overclock the only things you need to worry about is features and stability. The board you posted definately offers good features (both usb 3 and sata 6Gbps), and stability is mostly a matter of good brand and how long the board has been out (ie. how many bios revisions it’s been through). The board should definately suffice, even for moderate overclocking, but read some reviews if you’re still in doubt.

took a bit of time to look for reviews and it appears that is correct, but that was not the point of my post. I simply thought it was odd to emphasize useless stuff like color profiles and leave the most important question unanswered.

Are you building a rig for gaming only ? If so, dont buy a i7 based machine, you are wasting money. Get i5 system instead. Say i5-760, overclock it a bit, and you have much more horsepower for tf2 (and other games) and you save a lot of money. In general i5 *lynnfield* cpu’s are better for games then i7.
One good cooler is Cooler Master Hyper 212+, which is also very cheap.

FOR THE LOVE OF GOD please don’t buy the PC yet!
Wait for the Intel Sandy Bridge chipset coming out in January. Prices will cost the same, but Sandy Bridge offers a huge performance boost over socket 1156 & 1366.

The i5-2400 ($184) almost beats an i7 980X Extreme (almost $1000, granted it would do better at rendering and stuff). The 2400 doesn’t even have Turbo enabled during that benchmark!
I also agree that if you’re only going to be gaming, I would just save yourself the money and go for the i5.

You call that huge? Not even the same clock speeds…i5 760 would get higher with higher clock speed. Not huuuuuuge difference..
But as the others say, go i5 not worth the money to go for i7. i5 are often better in games than i7.
i’m planning to get new pc with AMD PHENOM II X4 955 BLACK EDITION cpu, should be cheapier than iFIVE
