If you’re looking at the scoreboard to judge skill, you’re doing it wrong. (to some extent)

Just stating the obvious, although I do believe this is a common misconception.

Quoted from kaidus

If I’m playing with someone who is never where I expect him to be, then I assume he’s not capable of playing at whatever level we are playing at (assuming it’s an at least semi-serious game).

This.

Also. If someone doesnt add something to the team in terms of presence, dm-power, comms, then he cant handle the skill level. Also, when a player dies unnecessary when you have (dis)advantage or goes for kills instead of capping points and watch for flankers he will leave a pretty poor image to me.

Back on topic. I think what a player says for their skill level isn’t important. It shows their ambition of where they want to play. Experience != skill level. Experience shows where a player has actually played.

Capture Points > Kills

Having experience helps you solve particular situations like going for backcap, distracting enemy, putting pressure on their scouts at the right time etc with ease. + You know what you can expect from the opponent…I would say that intelligence and anticipation help you the most :))

Reference point for a good soldier:

*2000+ points on some good mge server (skills required: dm aim, airshots, juggle, standard ammo management, micro positioning) – I sux at this, can’t get over 1550 points on nervous energy mge server :S but I’ve seen an guy called some kind of philosopher who had like 2600+, and Mike has around 2500.

*experience of some 500+ lobbies or mixes (much greater than lobbies) – thx guys for mercing me (especially zeyork :-* ), a div4 solly, even tho I play medic often, or clan pcw’s and offies (skills required: common team play, mumble comms, calling, macro positioning, push/pull dynamics, target priority choosing, ammo management both yours and map’s, hp packs exploiting, sneaking, basically combat and communication intelligence, stable internet, activity) – This is my best attribute.

*gone through some jump maps like some from tf2jump.com (skills required: very good jump feeling) – I’ve never been good at jumping.

*(bonus) real life awesomeness (skills required: drinking large amount of booze, singing ability, dancing, stand up comedy, just to be a nice guy to be spending time with)

Cheers!

Experience doesn’t always mean skill. I know good players with just few hundred hours played with their main class who are better than some people with like 1000 hours and whose team is stuck in the same division for 3-5 seasons in a row…
