Steam update:
– (Linux) Fixed excessive Steam cpu use when running Team Fortress 2
Anakin, get on the case of FPS testing.
Will try on Fedora.
New test:
My game runs in fullscreen, 1680×1050, with low fps settings.
Nvidia 313.09 drivers.
8800 GT.
Intel Core 2 Duo E6600 OC’d @ 3 GHz
Timedemo results:
Ubuntu 12.10 64bit with Cinnamon:
87 FPS
88 FPS
Ubuntu 12.10 64bit with Unity:
93 FPS
95 FPS
Windows 7 64bit:
90 FPS
91 FPS
EDIT:
Looks like I am getting better FPS with Unity than Cinnamon, and it is slightly higher than Windows 7!

Are you planning to test on some lightweight desktop environment like XFCE or LXDE?
Will try, but looks like I’ll have to make a new demo, this one keeps crashing all the time now for some reason.
I’d blame the tf2 update. I hear it broke all kinds of things.
I’d like to request Gnome Classic though if possible :P I just cba to fix my legacy amd drivers to get tf2 to run on my laptop.
I guess by Gnome Classic you mean the fallback mode?
I’ve uninstalled all the gnome stuff considering that they plan to remove the fallback mode someday.
I still have MATE though, which is a fork of Gnome 2.

Ok, new timedemo after the update:
My game runs in fullscreen, 1680×1050, with low fps settings.
Nvidia 313.09 drivers.
8800 GT.
Intel Core 2 Duo E6600 OC’d @ 3 GHz
Timedemo results:
Ubuntu 12.10 64bit with Cinnamon:
70 FPS
72 FPS
Ubuntu 12.10 64bit with Xfce:
77 FPS
78 FPS
Ubuntu 12.10 64bit with Gnome Classic/Fallback:
76 FPS
78 FPS
Windows 7 64bit:
80 FPS
83 FPS
Few more on Win7 this time.
Yeah meant Gnome Fallback/Classic/2 or whatever people like to call it.
Thanks for the tests!
It makes me sad it runs best with unity, I heavily dislike it :(
Performance is pretty much the same on Xfce/Gnome Classic/Unity.
Unity:
76 FPS
78 FPS
KDE:
71 FPS
72 FPS
KDE (desktop effects suspended):
77 FPS
78 FPS
Can I somehow use the files from my windows-install to run TF2 on ubuntu or do I need to waste another 10-15 GB on my ssd?
Haven’t installed steam yet, not sure if I should bother, is TF2 fully functional?

Yes, and the GCF names are capitalized under linux, BTW.
e.g. Team Fortress 2 Content.gcf
I finally have a reason to install Linux!
