While his glorious TF2 career died before it really began, he will always live on in our hearts.

You forgot the wheels. He’ll never stop rolling.

100% agree. Tbh, Byte is one of the most elitist players in the scene. He masks it well, but his attitude towards pickups is a dead give away. I know I’ll get flamed for this, but I don’t care.
Besides, I don’t get it. Lots of players that are div1 or prem now learned the ropes in the old pug2 channel. You have any idea how many games Kaidus and I played in that shit for example. It also got me noticed in terms of my scout play and I ended up in a div 2 (would be div 1 these days) level team.
Bless, if you think that fair enough it’s your opinion :), however stay on topic please.
Cheers

It’s legitimately gay as fuck or ‘keen’ if you want to tryhard and onclass in a doublemix at 2am, thats why its scorned jason :D
What’s wrong with being “keen” if you play a doublemix filled with people who are like 4divs above you? Regardless of the fact that it is a doublemix and people are generally just having fun, the skill height you play (assuming you’re a lower div player) is WAY HIGHER than that of an uber-serious div6/5 official. Ideally you’d want a proper mix (official is pushing it) where you get constant feedback on how to improve, but if we just get screamed at for being bad and being “keen”/”tryhard” at a level way above ours, what other options do we have?
Whenever I get a 2am doublemix call (thanks Ramown for not letting me sleep :DDDD) I treat is as a way to “get noticed” because let’s face it, people like me from the depths of the “shit divs” don’t really get the attention/help any other way, unless you happen to be part of a massive circlejerk and have contacts way up in the high levels so that you can “have a shot at being the best and if it doesn’t work out, you have that experience anyway”.
I give every game my best when I’m playing with good people often in the valiant hopes of getting noticed. Hell playing with people from way above is already stressing enough (questions like “shit, am I fucking up? Are they raging at me for being bad? Is my comms shit? Am I dying too much for them?” pop in your head and often into comms). We from the lower divs often try to make a good impression of ourselves infront of higher level players. Think about it, fucking around in div1-prem doublemixes is still something to be able to learn from, simply because they’re fucking around with superior aim/gamesense/positioning. Is that not something worth picking up, given that we don’t have any other exposure? Is it wrong to be “keen” when people are just having fun, simply because we want to get noticed and get better to be able to handle such situations?
Maybe it won’t matter much to those div3+ people, but for people like me, its a valuable way of getting to know people on the higher divs and trying your best to perform at an acceptable and “noticeable” level.
And that is why my idea is the best. Captain style pickup which translates to an irc-based open doublemix.
Pickups were by far the best networking tool around before.
It seems like pickup2 is probably best compared with the old invite right now, i’m assuming there’s no captains but largely it’s there for the top end who want to play top end pickups. There wasn’t half as much QQ about the old invite before because you had your pickup2 (and technically mpuk pickup1, LOL). Kinda unfortunate it’s called pickup2 really as it is, because it makes people think it should be the same as what it was before, and that seems to be what the opinion divide here stems from.
NB: I’m not in the current pu2 so i’m not sure if it’s an accurate comparison, but that’s what i’ve gathered from here…

In Byte’s defence, he gave me alot of temp- invites.
Alot of temp invites to someone who never even played on etf2l, and with 0 official 6v6 matches played ever.
One temp invite became another, and they just kept coming as soon as i asked for them.
I learned alot from pickup2, probably learned more in 48h being in mpuktf2.pickup2, than in 1000 of playing team fortress 2 itself.
After playing in mpuktf2.pickup2 for a while i finally got a perm invite, and i still sometimes when i press TAB and look at the player names i’m like; “wow how did i get here?” :D
I would just like to say, it’s not impossible to go from nothing to playing on a really high skill level, all you need is to be patient, willing to learn and be talented.
On mpuktf2.pickup2 I, a noob, met skeej and we started talking. Skeej was playing in the team VYE and i noticed they were looking for a soldier.
After a while i asked skeej kindly if i could merc for him once to see if i would fit in, and so i did. I joined their team, playing in division 1.
Skeej was really willing to teach me alot, and i was lucky to find such a good “mentor”.
After some troubles within VYE i replaced dauk’s demoman spot.
I went from absolutely div zero to playing in a div 1 team and fitting in just fine.
I don’t think it is right to say that tf2 is dead, tf2 is alive, and still growing each day.
Oh and p.s. when i was still an unknown scrub, which i still am, people used to treat me differently.
But when i actually joined skeej’s highlander team ( macleod daughters ) they took me in like one of their own and treated me with respect.
Ppl who played on top division skill level for a long time just playing along with someone who came out of nowhere and plays aside with them.
I get that people love to hate on Byte, due to him always taking things seriously in mixes and pickups, and his reputation with white knighting females etc.
But honestly, he has been the most consistent community contributor in TF2. I mean, shout casting, being an admin on IRC channels (shifting through invite requests even if he doesn’t seem to do so now as people claim?) and League admin work. He has done a shit ton more towards mentoring and trying to help bad players improve than anyone else. He has also been at the top level of TF2 for longer than anyone else in prem right now if i’m not mistaken? People giving him constant shit, don’t seem to realise that without people like him, Torden, Admirable, Skyride and others who are still around and actually willing to do shit, things would only die that much quicker.

get valve to support tf2 competitive
This basicly, more tournaments, more prizes etc etc.
Would result in a much bigger attraction, and competition and raise the skill level. Since people want to practice more, and to good for a reason.
Im serious.
