So this has happened to me already twice. Friday was the first time and now again -_-
When i tried to launch TF2 it just poped out a window saying “Validating steam files” .. it run up to 100% and NOTHING happens… so try to run TF2 again.. again same window – again – NOTHING HAPPENS. Steam restart didnt help at all. Neither did pc restart.. so i decided to reinstal the game. So Saturday morning check on TF2.. and everything was fine. it was running again. Untill this evening. Restarted pc and couldnt get TF2 to start. Same story with that steam validating files shit. Steam restarted 3 times – same story. PC restart 3 times… on the 3rd time it said TF2 is so fragmented it needs a defrag… sooo no im running the defrag – hoping it will run TF2 after it once again. BUT.. i have seen on some forums people how this same problem and no one has come up with a solution so far.
So here is what is bugging me the most – the season is about to start and what if this happens just before an official match ?
Hope someone has found a fix for this.
You have to wait for like more than 10 minutes and it should be fine ;)
I’ve been having the same issue, to fix it last night i had to reinstall one of the tf2 files (a 4gig file takes about 20 minutes for me) as i couldn’t tell if the defrag was doing anything.
Same thing is happening today :/
Didn’t like 50% of the players experience this a couple of months ago? The solution was to redownload the .gcf-files, which are:
source materials.gcf
source models.gcf
source sounds.gcf
team fortress 2 client content.gcf
team fortress 2 content.gcf
team fortress 2 materials.gcf
sourceinit.gcf
winui.gcf
multiplayer ob binaries.gcf
orangebox media.gcf
source 2007 shared materials.gcf
source 2007 shared models.gcf
source 2007 shared sounds.gcf

I found a fix
Defrag your in game files (through steam, not through windows defrag) it may look like it’s done until it says ready to play
If it doesn’t work. Delete everything in steam apart from the .exe and steamapps then defrag again

i did re-instal the game on friday.. obviously that didnt help. Yesterdays defrag did help though… for now. Lets hope it stays that way
That happens to me sometimes, but this fixes it for me.
Put these lines in a .bat file:
e: can’t post the code as all backslashes gets deleted. http://pastebin.com/NfbUmw8K
Modify lines 2 and 3 to the HDD and directory where your steam is installed.
When you have that problem again, just exit steam, run the .bat file and start steam again.
Of course you can also manually delete the files but this is just faster if you get the issue often.

Type double backslashes \ :)

when steam validates his files they have to redownload the corruptet/missing files, thats why it could take so long
