Not a ‘studio mic’, but:

Get 5 of these: http://www.dealextreme.com/details.dx/sku.4468
With one of these http://www.dealextreme.com/details.dx/sku.5157

5 so you can just replace it if it breaks.

Audio quality is very good.

I would do (and thanks for trying to help), but the clip-on I’m using at the mo was very cheap as well, so I could do the same with that- but that’s exactly what I don’t want, I’ve had it with cheap shitty mics that get loose contacts after a matter of weeks and cause me to go static all of a sudden etc. I’ve gone through 15 or so headsets in about 5 years, and additional “stand-alone” mics on top, think of the money spent and add the hassle it caused.
I want something that’s built to last now.

So now I’m looking to buy some ridiculously over the top badass motherfucking studio microphone with army-grade durability so I can just plop it somewhere in this TINY room (I can pretty much touch the walls to all sides) and people will still be able to hear me.

I think I’m one of the few that actually uses a studio mic (more like a stage mic) for gaming.

I use this: http://www.thomann.de/de/behringer_mic100_tube_ultragain_micpreamp.htm?sid=3afbf89e797c4c28840335b357d62b41
Plus something like this: http://www.thomann.de/de/cat.html?gf=headset_microfoons&oa=pra
Actually, I’ve got this one: http://www.monacor.de/typo3/index.php?id=62&L=1&act=8&act_sub=21&artid=6978&spr=EN&typ=u and it cost me 25 euros. Not expensive for a mic with great voice quality. (can’t find the exact same model on thomann)

You need the preamp to give your (condenser) mic 48v phantom power and convert the XLR signal to a regular line signal. Hook up the preamp to your soundcard’s line-in (not microphone in). I hope you can config your soundcard/drivers/apps so that it uses the line-input for voicecomms. If you can’t, just use a pc mic like Arie suggested. (or buy an expensive soundcard with all kinds of gizmos and gadgets that you will never use yet still pay for)

[edit] Adjusted links for your locale. that mic i’ve got shouldnt be too hard to find as it’s a German brand, but I think it’s an OEM manufacturer anyway so you’re gonna see it pop up as different brands probably[/edit]

Thanks skeej, that looks good, although I don’t think that kind of mic would be my first choice (especially since it’s on a headband :P).

I really want something I can just put somewhere on my desk (for a long time) and it won’t sound like I’m down the hallway, jerking off a goat in the kitchen.

I saw you linking that before and thoroughly ignored it but will give it a go now, what the hell. Thanks for now, I’ll be back once it breaks.

Right right. Well what I did to that headset is demolish the headband, leaving me with a very lightweight mic that i can just clip between my headphone’s earpiece and my .. temple? i believe its called? the area above your ear.

But if you get that preamp, you can use any studio grade mic you want. You can use a condenser with stand if you want. But if you are far away from the mic, you are going to sound far away from the mic. This effect only increases with better mics. Theres no way to solve that.

Oh yes and I completely dismissed semi-pro USB microphones! They are quality condensers, but the same counts here: If you are far away from the mic, you’re gonna sound far away from the mic :P

Try to find a cardioid condenser mic. The cardiod pattern has a long range of sensitivity, but does not record “from behind the mic”, so it will dismiss a lot of room acoustics, making you sound not “far away” from the mic. Probably. I’m not a professional audio engineer xD

Yeah, this mic has 3 different patterns, so I’ll give it a go and see how it sounds (not like I’m gonna put it 4 meters away), can always send it back to amazon and get something proper if it doesn’t suffice. Thanks to you again, as well.
