weqo and I have been discussing this for a couple of hours.

It’s interesting to hear it from his point of view. One of the key differences I noted was that in Sweden there is a law whereby from the 1st of December to the 31st of March all drivers must use winter tyres.

*nobody* in the UK uses winter tyres. Not even our buses. Considering last year I think we had a single day of snow all year, it’s quite a surprise when we get ~30cm and it stays for 2 weeks.

Similarly he mentioned that in some areas of Sweden people will own ploughs which they use as a second job and get paid by their local council. That plus regular grit/salt at 4am makes for more tolerable conditions.

Us on the other hand… we have a shortage of grit, we don’t use salt and the only ploughs are the ones on the front of the gritters which aren’t getting used :D

It’s both the government’s fault and the general public. Good article here ( http://www.independent.ie/opinion/analysis/eddie-cunningham-cold-war-time-suv-showoffs-got-a-grip-1998941.html ) which gives a little insight into the total lack of competence some of our drivers display.

And snow/ice really isn’t that much more difficult to drive in that rain, people just don’t how to adapt for different weather conditions.

What? It’s massively different. Both have reduced friction for the car but snow/ice is vastly more difficult! Rain whilst making the road surface wet, especially if it creates surface water – will not cause as much of a loss in traction as snow and ice will. As dunc pointed out – we don’t have winter tyres in the UK. Snow gets compacted into tyres as people trundle along and will make it vastly more difficult to handle the car.

I fully agree that people shouldn’t bother driving unless they absolutely have to. Some of the videos on the BBC’s website are hilarious. People trying to go up hills and gunning the engine – not gonna work there chaps! :p

Sweden got the right idea for winter. Reminds me of when my dad used to always get me and my sister fresh tyres come december just to be on the safe side etc.

Aren’t you German?

I politely suggest you shut the fuck up.

Because we don’t know anything about snow, it only being an annual occurance and shit.
Also, very polite indeed.

Yes, clearly it’s the fault of all the people. We only know about the snow we see. England especially does not get metres of snow on which we can all take our husky sleds and build igloos. I know I personally called all the public transport services this morning and asked them not to bother doing anything, so yeah let’s blame all the people. Unprepared country does not equal people having no clue :]

I’m not blaming the general public but the delivery service since I -as mentioned- await a package.

I’m sorry if I offended anyone by making them feel inadequate, I just want my PSU :(

What I mean is it’s more of the same :P Much more severe, but of the characteristics of how you lose grip as the same.

I wasn’t in any way referring to your country’s knowledge of snow and the polite part may have been mildly sarcastic.
