Haha, I just like to consider all options and make the best possible choice.. :-)
But I take a Steelseries Ikari Laser and a Qpad CT medium mouse pad.
I think I am too fond of the Ikari shape to really get used to something else.
Also I think other people looking for a mouse might learn somthing from this thread..
Since you don’t seem to understand I’ll say it here. DPI is nothing more than a marketing scam to encourage noobs to think higher DPI gives progressively higher accuracy. NOBODY needs more than 800 dpi to guarantee pixel perfect accuracy unless playing at a rediculously high screen resolution like 3800×2460 or something.
MX518 is not bad just because it’s older “hardware” as you put it. The mouse tracks equally as well as Razer Deathadder and uses practically the same optical engine as far as I know. Both of these mice have absolutely no problems with tracking regardless of how fast you move the mouse. It’s impossible to move these mice at a speed/acceleration fast enough to make them track wrongly provided you’re using any half decent mouse pad.
Laser mice having higher DPI does NOT mean they are more precise in any significant measurable terms. Theoretically yes higher dpi is more precise but it is not this simple. As an example, playing with MX518 @ 800 dpi @ 1680×1050 resolution will give you the same pixel-perfect precision in an FPS as a Razer Mamba @ 5600 dpi @ 1680×1050
Any reviews you read that say you’ll get more precision in games with laser mice due to higher DPI should be disregarded as reviews from people who have no clue and have bought into the same marketing bullshit that so many other new gamers do on search for their first gaming mouse.
To put it simply 1800 dpi is more than you’ll ever need, as is anything over 1000 dpi in a mouse unless you play at an extremely high screen resolution.

Ok, but what about skipping ?
Shouldn’t a higher DPI help against skipping since it takes snapshots at the mousepad at a higher rate ?
Or are there absolutely no advantage with higher DPI ?
When I changed my DPI from 800 to 1600 on my Ikari optical it felt much better in a way. But of course it might have been an psychological effect.

Yes, I have read that very few people encounter skipping problems with those mice.
(Even if some people say that you can make the DA skip on some surfaces at higher speeds)

Agree. Regarding the Ikari laser, some reviewers says it is more precise than the optical version, but not just because it has higher DPI, but because of their experiences in-game.
So what about DPI, what DPI should you use and what difference does it make ?
I have noticed, in accordance with what you say, that many professional gamers use rather low DPI on their mice.
Whwn I bought my Ikari optical I read like 30 tests or more, found a really good test with proffesional gamers that tested mice for over 3 months, sorry to say but I cant find it now, anyway, the conclusion was: Deathhadder an Ikari (optical) was the best, no mather what mice they usually used, so I went for the Ikari because it fitted my hand better.
I would really like to see that test.
More of those kinds of tests are needed. Usually the reviewers tests a mouse for some hours and conclude it is the best mouse they have ever used..

Just read it, you’ll see that the best mice are optical and it’s all explained why. Every mouse should be tested with this scheme imo.
So if you felt comfortable with the Ikari optical just get it again. The only other choices would be DA or mx518. Trust me, I had 2 laser mice, with both I experienced pixel skipping.
hi iller i’ve a deathadder and i use it on vista without any problem with drivers…the shape is perfect for right hands, moreover i use both palmgrip and claw in different situation and i find it confortable i both cases…the 2 mouse side buttons are perfectly located and with good response i’ve never had a problem with tracking excepet when i sometimes lift it from the pad to move it back to the center (i’am low sense and sometimes i need to do that) i hope this can help you

Yes it is a nice article. However, it is 2 years old and the laser technology has improved quite a lot during the last two years.

I tested the DA a bit in a store and the shape is quite ok. The only real problem I had was that I had nowhere to place the two fingers on the far right on my right hand.
According to tests the DA seems to have maybe the best optical sensor around.
I really like the sidebuttons on the DA also. Much easier to press than on the Ikari.
The perfect mouse would be an optical mouse with the sensor of the DA, the shape of the Ikari, the sidebuttons of the DA and the functions of the Ikari laser…
Edit : Seems everyone has different opinion about this optical vs laser issue.
