They are the same word, meaning the same thing but spelled/spelt differently.
Only people who have no knowledge of what the rest of the world is doing regarding the English language will dispute this fact.
Next thing they’ll be telling me that the words colour and behaviour have no “u” in them.

The past tense and past participle of spell (only in the word-related sense) can be either irregular (spelt) or regular (spelled).
British English allows both irregular and regular forms. In American English, the irregular forms are never or hardly ever used.
