I’m thinking of maybe go beyond my happy place with Intel and nVidia, so give good reasons to try those other stuff out.
Feel free to flame, just don’t get yourself banned. :P
AMD and ATI both give better price/performance value than Intel and NVidia, respectively.
That’s about it in a nutshell.
On sheer performance the i5/i7 series beat the Phenom II but the price is quite significantly higher (Think the only exception might be the i5 750 with mobo), ATI’s 5000 series is on a par with all of NVidia’s GTX400 series while being cheaper and less heatproducing.

Not really. Plus it would only matter if you lived in a hole. Then you’d probably notice the extra heat generated.

I’ve heard AMD cpus are warmer than Intel. I don’t like that.
It’s the other way around, Intel is much hotter than AMD.
from my experience, ati gfx cards are better than nvidia’s
Oh god don’t bring the pointless fanboy topics here please ((
Look at your budget; find cards within that budget; google for benchmarks.
Dont matter whats better than what… Its what performance your gonna get with the money you got available!
Know he is asking which is better but he did say “Im thinking of going beyond my happy place” so sounds like he wants to upgrade whats your budget? And what resolution do you play games at etc… Ie if he only plays at 1024 id say grab a 4890 that will last ages and the £250 u save from buying a 5850 or more money saving buying a 470,480 could go towards a sweet SSD drive.
But ive always gone intel and nvidia… Had ATI in my 2nd system once or twice 9800 and a x1800xt both died within 2 months never no problems with nvidia!
ATi’s (58xx) graphics cards use less power, are cooler (temperature) and the FAN produces less noise.

Might be, if you use the standard cooler that comes with the cpu. Please dont use it. Buy a proper one.

I’M GOING TO WRITE THIS POST IN BOLD AND BLOCK CAPITALS SO YOU ACTUALLY READ IT PROPERLY.
THERE IS NO BEST BETWEEN NVIDIA/ATI OR INTEL/AMD. THERES JUST WHICH PRODUCT IS BEST FOR YOUR PARTICULAR SCENARIO. FOR EXAMPLE, IF YOU ARE LOOKING FOR A REASONABLE PRICE HIGH SPEC PC, AN INTEL I5 SYSTEM IS CLEARLY THE WINNER HOWEVER IF YOU JUST WANT A CHEAP GAMING SYSTEM, AN AMD TRIPLE/QUAD CORE MAKES MORE SENSE.
WITH GRAPHICS CARDS AT THE MOMENT TO BE FAIR, ATI KIND OF HAVE THE BEST VALUE FOR MONEY IN EVERY AREA, BUT THERES NO POINT BEING A FANBOY AS 18 MONTHS AGO, THERE WAS GENUINE CONCERN THAT AMD WOULD GO BUST AS THEY DIDN’T REALLY COMPETE IN THE HIGH END OF THE MARKET AND INTEL JUST HAD THEM BEAT IN EVERY WAY WITH CPUS.
SO BASSICALLY WHAT ANATHEMA SAID. LOOK AT YOUR BUDGET AND YOUR NEEDS, THEN SEE WHATS THE BEST VALUE FOR MONEY, DON’T JUST BE A FANBOY.
/end rant
