Weird. I get weird stuttering in my large (6gig+) recordings. But I think its the fact you are converting an AVI into an AVI. No real point to that.
if it’s lossless, then it’s normal
the file contains more data and would read faster than your hdd is capable of (or something like that)

there were few debates about this, but never got a conclusion: which one do you (morf and decap too) prefer at the final rendering? 30 or 60 fps? and why?

Any tips on making smoothing look, well, smooth? I guess I just try to smooth from too many angles and end up with lotsa weird turns :(
Is there any way to smooth around yourself? Or can this only be achieved through multiple demos of the same match?
And opinions on slow atmospheric music :D
Don’t do too many camera points, 2 is best, 3 at most. You need another players PoV to smooth yourself, or you can use SourceTV. I believe Valve’s new demo system is supposed to fix this when they get around to finishing it.
Cameras with low fov look great. Currently this can only be achieved from a sniper PoV while he is zoomed in, or from a SourceTV demo by spectating a sniper that is zoomed in, then moving into freecam. You can record a lower FoV smooth from a regular demo by recording at 1280×1024 and cutting off the top and bottom.

whatever i do it just seems like the end products fps is really high and thus making the video slow. but if i lower the fps the end product just looks terrible,
Could you post an example?

im having problems compiling in vdub. im taking the 2gig avi file and opening in vdub, compiling it using Lagarith lossless codec. it makes it like 600mb but then when i open it in vegas or anything else the video isnt really a video anymore, its crazily choppy and most of it is missing.
any idea what im doing wrong? :D
Turn down the preview quality to Preview or Draft and it should play smoothly. Lagarith is designed for compression, not for playback. To make this easier to work with, you can render h264 proxies that the software will use to preview while you edit, and then render with the original file.

What do you personally look for in a song that you’re gonna use in a movie?
Originality or a style, as decap mentioned.
Quoted from Starkie
How often do you make transitions in the music (say, cutting out a bit or adding another layer to add effect)?
Do you think too many transitions can ruin the flow of the music?
Umm, totally depends on the song but it happens I guess. It’s quite unusual you use the full 7 minutes of a song for a frag movie right?

I take it you are processing the path with Spline- Origins and Angles?
You can do a perfect spin around your own model using “cam_” cvars in the console when in “thirdperson”, I think it is implemented in the PldX tool these days though.
Can’t see a problem with it as long as it’s fitting :)

Try recording with .tgas instead, I had some problems with .avis in the past but I have not had a problem since I switched to .tgas :)

What sort of FPS should you be recording at/rendering at?
Totally depends on what you want your outcome to look like, decap recorded the Alienware-movie in 1000 fps, and I’m recording my current project in 960. Takes a lot of space but I feel like it’s really worth it.

How can you satisfy everyone with the songs you use?
You can’t satisfy everyone with the songs, you have to satisfy them with the appropriate editing. But in all honesty, you can never satisfy everyone, that is something you will have to accept.

For my first little test I did.. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=t0YEvulYSHw
I used 120 recorded FPS and rendered it at 30. Can you get by recording at less than 120 if you don’t plan on using slow-mo for that clip? And is it noticeable if clip A is 120 and clip B is 90?
Mainly hard drive space is the concern. With a 5-10 minute video and 30 seconds being 6+ gig at 120 fps… hard drive space goes bye bye fast! :p
Hard Drives are insanely cheap now, you shouldn’t really be having a problem with that. It’s like $60usd for a 1tb. I would not recommend recording below 120fps, as resampling low fps like this just makes it really blurry and unpleasant. I recommend recording at 240fps but 120fps minimum.

You can’t. Pick a song you like, that is exciting, doesn’t draw too much attention away from the frags, but gives some flow to the movie. Don’t touch dubstep or death metal.

Good/bad transitions?
edit: transitions are at 2:20 and 4:45
Great. The songs are similar enough in style that it helps move the movie from one song to the next without being obtrusive to the viewer.

I make less than 8 US $ per hour… Its not cheap :p

How do you have the patience to record at 1000fps?
Alt+Tab -> watch a movie/series

Get a large hard drive and record using VDM files. Example here: http://tinypaste.com/ab6e9e
Put it in the same folder with the same name as the demo you’re recording and it will record automatically. Then go to the shops or something

Still, that must take a huge amount of time, for say 5 minutes worth of clips. What do you say to people like Torden who record at 60fps?
Best way to record slow motion footage at 60 fps?

I can’t stand 60fps. Looks like a slideshow, especially for classes like scout and sniper, you can’t see the players aim, which can make movies a lot less impressive. If you watch a movie like Meatshot 3 or Yz50’d you can really appreciate the players’ aim.

? Slow motion = higher fps. If you slowmo anything below your render framerate it will look terrible.
I’m doing a demoman movie so it’s not vital for me to have omg 200000fpszzzzzz.
and im on a laptop, so rendering takes 20000 years and i have 20gb of space left on my hdd
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=8JPnIVsQqUg
a result of slow mo, albeit it was a render error that caused the slow mo.
