Smoothing for Retards.

I’ve tried a dozen tutorials and I can’t seem to get this smoothing business down, so obviously it must be my fault. Does anyone have a link to a tutorial where the guy explains the whole idea thoroughly step by step?
Not sure what the problem actually is seen as I follow them all to the word, but every time I go to make a key at my preferred location the camera will instantly snap back to its original tick location or do something else equally annoying.

I don’t understand why this is so hard, all I want is a static camera shot (or with some slight horizontal movement or rotation) from a perspective other than firstperson whilst everything else plays back normally, I kinda thought as far as film-making goes this was incredibly basic. Could someone please enlighten me, Thank you.

If you can’t follow that you dont deserve to be able to smooth :P
The youtube video explains the problem but so you can read it straight away. You need to HOLD the “make key” button, then move to the camera position, then you let go of the button.
If all you need is a static camera shot you can just use the ‘drive’ function in demoui and put the camera where you want and record from there.
1. Load -> Go To [Tick] -> Enter -> Just Play again -> Pause
2. Smooth -> Reload
3. Start [Tick], End [Tick]
4. Select -> Show Processed -> Pause at beginning of start tick
5. Set View -> Drive
6.0. Make Key -> HOLD MOVE (now you can move with wasd buttons+mouse)
6.1. (when you want the position of camera, stop holding move)
6.2. (now spam click this button: > :on both the Play Demo and Smoother so they ALMOST match, Play Demo tick is more important than Smoother tick)
6.3. (Redo 6.0. and 6.1.)
6.4. (Redo all 6’s untill you get your wanted camera angles)
7. Process -> SPLINE ORIGINS (FIRST!) -> SPLINE ANGLES (SECOND!)
8.0. If you did smooth, you want your hud and viewmodel off when whole stuff records to demo_smooth
8.1. cl_drawhud and r_drawviewmodel needs to be both set to 0
9. SAVE (wait for a min, it will freeze the game, but is actuall processing) -> OK (button will gray out when its done).
10. Undrive -> Close
Easy!
Appreciate the replies, I shall give it another bash.
& Thanks for writing all that out, Painstouch.

You da man, man.
Big thanks Painstouch, finally managed it.
Just one more question, now I’ve realised that I cant actually view my actions when smoothing my own demo, how the hell am I supposed to get a smooth of my frags/actions? Do I need someone else’s demo?
feel free to flame ze noob.

STV demo ?
Still, you can’t smooth STV demos, but you can record in spectator cam. And yes you’ll need someone else’s demo to smooth your own action.
I read somewhere that if you use “thirdperson” before starting to smooth you can see yourself. Never put it in to practice but if you think about it it makes sense.

The model will move if you move the camera.
Thanks all. /me hopes SFM is more intuitive & less primitive.. if/when it gets released
funny, you resurrected a dead thread -and- failed to understand the initial post entirely.
