But I still think a lot of newcomers cry to much that they won’t get picked by higher div teams. they might call it elitism or whatever. fact is most of the higher div teams played their way to the top. they improved and earned kind of respect by sticking together. If I would have to recruit a player I’d pick at least one who has some history, made some effort. instead one who just tries to go with the bandwagon. also most of the teams who try to recruit do need players who actually boost their performance for the next season. it takes some time to integrate new faces and train them up. time that alot of teams doesn’t have at all if they have to prepare for pro- or demotion games.
I concur that people are discarded far too easily. Myself I played pickups/mixes/merced and developed as a player that way, but most teams weren’t too enticed by a player without a history, and generally were reluctant to trial me or give me priority, and that’s something I find a lot.
Also, my first pickup I had kodyl PMing me afterwards telling me to never play this game again and raging. : D

The recruitment market in TF2 is very similar to the job recruitment market in real life.
The people who build the best CV’s in real life get the higher paid and higher skilled jobs
The people who build the best CV’s in TF2 get the higher skilled and higher division clans
Other factors include contacts, luck, personality, availability and simply being in the right place at the right time.
This elitism crap is most likely occuring, but no where near as much as people are suggesting. It is being used as a scapegoat for players to complain when they don’t get their own way. I don’t discourage players to take punts from div6-3 or from div3-1, because you may get lucky. The fact is, many dozens of punts are taken every time a team recruits and not all of them can be trialled. I do agree that if people are to be turned down, they should be in a nice manner. Also respect to people making the effort to give everyone a trial
I think the main reason people dont want to trial people from lower divs is just the fact that when you do search for someone you get at least 10 utter noobs whining for a spot and messaging you every 5 minutes… Kinda puts you off :X

It seems a lot of newcomers desperately want to be a part of a good team just because of the status or something like that.
I fail to see the point of beeing a part of a team where everyone is much better than yourself. You will constantly be performing much worse than the rest. You will be at the bottom of the scoreboard in every match and people in your team will whine on you about your performance..
Maybe all newcomers should be allowed to wear the Dignitas clan tag for a week to feel like a pro and then go on and play in some more fitting teams ? :-)
When I was playing for LoL about 2 years ago, we were playing the low end of div 4 and I didn’t think we would get anywhere with TF2. Then ShitFly and PN from Hadouken, then mid div 3, contacted me if I wanted to trial for them. Completely out of nowhere basically, because I hadn’t made a recruitment post or anything.
They gave me a shot and I did fine apparently. Point is, there is always a clan higher up who wants to take a player in, as long as you’re friendly to them and willing to improve in this game. What Jones said about the right place and the right time is very true in this story: when your target group of teams are all steadily improving, there’s no room for you there. So yeah, it’s a bit about luck, but mostly about improving yourself and showing the clans higher up that you have potential to move further. That how I formed Team Stinson, more or less: I picked the players I found talented, friendly and comitted to the game. If you are a lower division player with these characteristics, a team willing to take you in will come down the line anyway.
It might just take a while.
My story is a funny one, I used to play for FB but quit TF2 within a few months, and went back to quake. I came back about 6 months later just for a mess around and saw TLR|Wlv, so I asked him for a trial. It was obvious from the convo that he wasn’t interested in some pub player, especially as my nick was “itchi”. In the end I knew I wasn’t getting anywhere so I said “just give me one map” he did against eLD, I got 70 kills in that map, this was before the soldier nerfs :D
Once the “guy” didnt even say “hi” or whatever, he just rudly asked “Can you tell me WHY did YOU add me?”.
You should just use irc, if the dude doesnt know what you want from him and you randomly add……..
Just a little question: how the hell am I supposed to get div3 experience if all of you are fuckin’ elitists?
I dont know anything bout your skill, so nothing personal. But why do you want div3 only? Now thats elitism, ive seen players play the game for 3 days, declining all offers below div3. Jus because div4 isnt “good enough”, now thats bs. As a player without any history or higher clan experience you should be rlly happy any div4 clan wants you.
It takes alot of work and time getting to a higher level. Therefor you should be glad if you reach the skill for the next div during a full season.
If you rlly want to play you join any clan that wants you (even if they’re lower skilled), coz it will still give you alot of experience and playing hours.

-1 People setting their standards way too high and branding people ‘Elitists’ when they don’t get what they want, kind of double standards if you aren’t prepared to play in the lower divisions.

Imagine that on a scale of x50 if you even mention your searching “mid” in a recruitment post. its hard to sift through all the broken english speaking r-tards ^_^.
People have to take their time, build contacts, speak to people, learn the game, then you’ll get your chance. Its alright cutting people a break if poetential is seen, but people need to know not everyone can fit in the top divisions ;).
You have to stick with your clan and work it out even if you are epic phail.
Myself and former wotr2 guys were just pub nubs who enjoyed playing together and made it to division 2 without much effort. We gave a beating to many of todays top teams such as FB :D, who are now doing the same thing to other clans.
