Without default wins / losses, seasons would be massively delayed. Teams would refuse to play games just because they don’t have their ‘best’ lineup.
If you play your matches on time, you don’t ever get a default loss. It is _entirely_ the opposing team’s fault that Blight got a default win. The opposing team should maybe think about recruiting at least one more player if they can’t field a full lineup for a playoff game in a league with prizes, or even just a league of this calibre.
You don’t get default losses in football, because teams have substitutes. A player gets injurered and yes, the lineup suffers, but it’s part of the game. Recruiting, Rotating and Replacing players is all part of it.
I haven’t read into why Blight got the default, but I’m going to assume it is something to do with players either not being available, or leaving the opposing team. Correct me if I’m wrong. Default wins / losses are bad from a spectator point of view, so I think defaults should be almost a last resort, but you can’t fault blight for taking one, and you can’t say Blight do not deserve their playoff place because of it.
Back to the original post. I don’t think it’s such a ‘funny’ situation that Blight could win the league because they took a default in the regular season. No one would have complained it if it was in the first week.
Also, Epsilon appear to have taken a default against Yoyotech in the week 8 game? By your logic, does the team who gets the most advantageous position in the playoffs deserve to be there when they took a default to get there? Or is now the argument because Blight took a default against a strong team? Can’t be biased with a situation just because of the level of skill involved.
etc..

Nope, it’s not funny situation at all. Nobody cares but you mate.

Why’s everyone acting like this is a personal attack on blight?

Charming
Putting things aside, the playoff should be less left on a “random sorta thing”. Would like even see a final group thing, first 2 make it out and fight the final. But this 1 game and your out for a team that played well ALL SEASON, is not the best imo.
Fuck the haters!
Blight deserve to be in the playoffs far more than TCM, not to mention that they were perfectly within the rules.
Fuck the ‘top4’ circlejerk!
Their double standards on rule enforcement are laughable.
TCM vs FB gets played but Epsilon vs YYT is forfeitted, where is the consistency?
ETF2L needs to take it’s job seriously and crack some fucking skulls around here.
Anyway as slick is hinting at the bigger issue here is that the playoff system devalues the main season. Perhaps double elimination in the playoffs would help to remove some of the randomness, but that’s really more of a band-aid than a solution…
For spectator purposes, having a grand finale to the season is a very very very good thing. If you only used the seasons positions to determine who wins ETF2L, then the season could finish prematurely if a team simply gets too many points. The rest of the season then becomes a bore.
I agree, it is horrible to have an amazing season, and then have a single game ruin all of your hard work. This is why I don’t like the current system. A team can finish 1st and not actually get any prize. The team in 2nd place gets no reward over the 3rd and 4th place teams. Coming 2nd in the league is a huge difference to coming 4th, and the team should be rewarded for doing so.
1st place does get a nice reward… being able to pick their opponents can be a game changer. A team might have started the season badly but then sorted their lineup and began to dominate. They might end up finishing 4th place, even though their current form says they are good enough to finish 2nd. In this situation, if you used the traditional ‘1st vs 4th, 2nd vs 3rd’ routine… finishing 1st in the season would actually hinder the team based on the end of season form of the rest of the teams. Picking your opponent does sort that out, but it only gives a reward to 1st, not 2nd, 3rd and 4th.
I’ve typed this out so many times now, but I’ll say it again…
4th plays 3rd – 3rd picks decider map. (3rd gets a small advantage over 4th)
Winner plays 2nd – 2nd picks decider map. (2nd gets a bigger advantage. They pick the decider map and only have to win 2 games to win the league, while 4th and 3rd have to win 3).
Winner plays 1st – 1st picks decider map. (1st gets a bigger advantage. They pick the decider map and only have to win 1 game to win the league, while 4th and 3rd have to win 3, and 2nd place needs to win 2).
There are many reasons as to why this is a good system:
1) Advantages depending on final standings of the division (reward for better placement).
2) Prize distribution. 1st place in the league would be garaunteed either the 1st place prize, or the 2nd place prize. This is deserved for their hard work winning the season. The same goes with 2nd place in the league. They would get a minimum of the 3rd place prize (A suitable reward for coming 2nd place in the season).
3) Spectator sport: By using this system, one game is played at a time. Spectators to see a progressive cup. You can route for a team to go ‘all the wayyyyy’. There’s nothing more exciting seeing the 4th place team battle their hearts out, and make it to the grand final. They used this system in starcraft broodwar and the best proleague games I ever watched were when OGN Sparkies battled their way from 6th place? (in the same format, just with the top 6 I think) all the way to the final where…. they got completely stomped… but still. Exciting!
4) It makes the regular season more entertaining as teams would actually care about their position. Right now, when it mathematically becomes impossible to finish first, you no longer care about if you come 2nd, 3rd or 4th. In this season, even the fight for 4th place was resonably close, but in future seasons, we might find that 1st place has allready been decided 3/4 of the way into the season, and 4th place is unreachable by the 5th placed team.
I agree, Arx. You have valid points. And we will discuss some options on how to make the playoffs better as soon as the season is off.
(your suggestion might be an option for the next season)
+1 to the suggestion from Arx. That sounds like a much more exciting system to watch :D
Hmmm, I can see the e-posters and forum threads cropping up all over Europe for the ‘Grand Final of ETF2L’s Premiership season’
Nice, +1

The team in 2nd place gets no reward over the 3rd and 4th place teams. Coming 2nd in the league is a huge difference to coming 4th, and the team should be rewarded for doing so.
Just for clarification, that isn’t entirely accurate; the higher seed always gets to pick the 1st and potential 3rd map of the set.
But obviously you’re right, it’s still not as much of a reward as is part of the system you wrote about.
edit: the other important thing to remember is the admins tried to keep the playoffs as trim as possible. Each team has to play two games. In the system you wrote about, the 4th place team might have to schedule/play an extra game if they made it to the finals. Not saying it’s a bad idea, just that there are pros and cons to both.
Last edited by JimmyBreeze,
Arx’s idea does seem to be very good, but that means the 4th placed guys would have to play more matches if they get through and the finals would take longer as I doubt those that are 4th would want to play all their games in a week.
It could work if the dates of the end season and play off games would be decided at the start of the season, that way teams can make a note of the dates to play and make sure they don’t have anything in the way of it, unless they get shat on mid season and dont make playoffs.
But I have to say, this format is really really good, I think next season though people will just be playing for the playoff spots instead of the first place spot, unless there’s a good advantage of coming first that is.
Naturally there is a huge problem with the first placed people not being able to win anything depsite coming first in the league, but that problem will always be faced with this playoff system, however it provides a shit ton more entertainment than the old system did.
