Who won?
Can I say that it was kinda ashame that 5 team turned up to the highlander. Really disappointing that there was that little amount of teams. Last year there was 13.
I dunno what it is but it always seems like highlander just never gets the sign ups at lan and it highly annoying as for some use that’s the main reason we go to lan and to play a total of 4 matches is just shite.

I think the issue this time was schedule and the power/net issues MPUK had. The groups of 8 was a new thing to everyone and having the last 2 games on the same day as knockouts meant it was hard to know if you’d be in the 6v6 or not and then whether you’d want to play 9v9

Well only one game of the group stages of the 6v6 was played on the sunday, the signups didnt close till like 1pm on the sunday by that time it was knockout stages so at least 24teams of 6v6 could have signed up.
I feel the problem it doesn’t get enough recognition. 6s always get priority and thus highlander never gets the number. The schedule i feel need to suits both so that both tournaments get numbers.

more accurately, a combination of us fucking afterdark around and internet problems postponed it
Most 6v6 players could’ve entered highlander, if they wanted. The schedule was fine for it, it’s just that it’s a another huge time commitment to play another tournament.
6v6 at iseries will always get the priority while it’s still being sponsored. If the tables suddenly turn and nobody wants to put money up for 6v6 and a company sponsors highlander then you’ll probably a shift. The drive to international competition is favouring 6v6 significantly on the community front imo – people want to be involved in that. There were SO MANY epic games, and so much coverage of those games that it seemed an easy choice to follow that, over playing a highlander tournament when I have no interest in playing highlander [and beach taking the piss out of me because AD trashed us :D]. By Saturday/Sunday usually most of my friends have been knocked out of other games, so it’s kinda then I have the free time to go and play board games and socialise (or just get drunk in a corner). Preferring to do other things is pretty much why the 6v6 fun tournament itself always ended up with about 10 teams, 5 of them who gave up after about the first game :D
It seemed like more people were going to LAN to play a bit of a highlander after last year, but then yeah, this year didn’t do much at all. Needing 9 people puts you against it, and I think starts to make it really quite difficult for *actual* highlander teams to go (as opposed to 6v6 teams/communities forming mixes). I have no idea how you’d ever build that hype for highlander, without 6v6 somehow disappearing into oblivion.
I have no issue with 6v6 being the bigger thing, but yeah as you said it’s a shame the hl can’t be bigger alongside the 6v6, I guess people would just prefer to get smashed :P

If only we were all as good as Bob at doing both…
I agree Nym that if it got a sponsor then things would swing (any volunteers?). Yeah the logistics are not great getting 9 people to a lan or anything but its not impossible.
I think it just needs more hype and taken a bit more seriously than oh your out of the 6s just piss around in the hl comp. I mean its even under the Fun tab at lan. I would like a different attitude given to hl around lan and a better hype.
Last years HL seemed more popular, and worked out pretty well (apart from GPit and BBlitz taking forever). Strange how poorly attended it was this year then, considering how popular the format has become.

well, even last year, it wasn’t logistically possible to run the 6v6 and hl at entirely seperate times, and fun tournaments is a blanket term for tournaments with no prizes afaik, and when it has no prizes/sponsors/less interest overall, of course it’ll take a second place to the 6v6
one thing that is true is that it’d be cool to here more of a mention of the highlander though
If Highlander wants prize money teams need to turn up regardless of prize money (thats where 6v6 started, fun cups no money).
I understand that Highlander teams have 6v6 players in so that isn’t possible for some teams. So how about dropping the players who are more focused on 6v6 and recruting pure HL players, or at least dropping them for lan?
Thats the only way, if there were enough HL teams we could run HL and 6v6 together and get more prize money and treat them both as prize tournaments.
Unfortuantely we have a limited amount of TF2 players who come to lan anyway. so running them both at the same time and hoping for max numbers just isn’t feasible.
After playing 2-3 solid days of 6v6, indeed most players just want to get drunk and dont really care about HL, thats the way it is currently.
I’m willing to facilitate any realistic requests to make HL big at lan but the HL communitys need to push and get more teams to lan, try searching for your own sponsors to sponsor HL at lan? There isn’t any point moaning that HL isnt any bigger if people arn’t willing to put the effort in.
Why would we risk promoting HL as a main tournament only for there to be not enough teams? Its not worth the risk.
The only thing i will say is, if we put HL as the main prize winning tournament for i50 or i51 could we rally the HL troops and put some evidence behind the fact that people want to play HL?
though this is a rash, mostly not thought out response – I’m with you on the idea that it shouldn’t be the main tournament, potentially the main tournament on the winter or spring lan but it shouldn’t even try to precede 6v6 – the sponsors are there, as are the players willing to play it at lan currently etc, and I don’t expect that to change any time soon, disregarding the logistics of bringing 9 people to an event which I don’t think is that big of a deal really.
but yeah, definitely interesting idea running it as the big tournament on one of the ‘tf2 off-season events’, though as said already, people would have to prove that they’d turn up at one of the summer events before that’s a possibility – people (sponsors, tournament organisers, players even) don’t just jump aboard a game/gamemode if there aren’t people playing it…
