Hey Guys,
Little brainchild I had here, I notice that people are quite resistant to donate money to the cause, so I’ve thought of an idea to turn all this lovely metal and hats into some cash for the american prize fund. Simply add up http://steamcommunity.com/id/extvauction and trade your items with him and ill put them in the backpack, then in a few weeks ill run a big auction on the SPUF of a load of the items offered; simple!
If you’re from extv or want to help out with it, please add the account and ill give you the details so you can manage the account as well. I’ve bought a backpack expander for him from my own pocket, so don’t squander it!
If you know anyone who is a good trader and knows his way around the market, and could possibly take all these normal hats and metal and trade them for unusuals, earbuds and the like, then id greatly appreciate them getting in contact as well, as auctioning unusuals is always going to be nicer
Many Thanks, hope this works out

Going from metal and regular hats to buds/unusuals is quite time consuming even for a good trader (which I am not).
Buds are about 60 refined metal.
Hats are typically 1.33 to 1.66 refined unless vintage or highly sought after.
A typical unusual is maybe 2-4 buds, so on average 180 refined or 135 normal hats.
I was thinking we could sell metal for reliable small amounts and auction off the better stuff. If we offer 3/2 refined for a dollar then thats chunks of dependable money

3 refined for a dollar would be enough to get high demand I expect.
Traders would be all over it because they know they can sell a refined for around $0.50 if they are more patient.
Whatever’s collected (and honestly, I’m not sure many people would be up for just giving a random guy metal/hats and such – no offense), you may as well just sell the stuff for 5-10 cents off market price. If traders see that they can make a quick buck (say, buying 10 refined at 10 cents off per earns them only a dollar), then they will.
People buy Earbuds at $30 only to resell them for $31. Getting completely ripped off isn’t really the best way to do it – there’s high demand for TF2 items at the minute.

Shintaz, i intend to give full rights to the extv staff; dont want to just be another guy, but even if you dont trust me a few scrap can go a long way
And also, i dont know about market prices, and if someone was willing to enlighten me about this stuff then that’d be great
PS, i also own a max head 2 buds and 2 bills which i can throw in if i see some people contributing

This may help you keep track of item prices:
http://backpack.tf/id/extvauction
Although that site is somewhat WIP, there is always the classic spreadsheet:

One thing I’d say is that there’s no point accepting crates from people (apart from salvaged ones), as you can barely give them away. At least with weapons you can craft them into metal to free some space.

Heres an update with how its going to work:
Im going to put all the buds bills and metal in one backpack, with each refined going for 50 cents each (market price is around 52 cents, and people will see 1 dollar for 2 a really good deal)
=We have about 7 dollars of metal so far=
I will also segregate the hats into a different backpack, and then auction entire backpacks of hats with bidding starting at like 10-20 dollars
=We have about 3 pages of hats so far=
Only had 2 people trade me as well, and in only an hour; get involved and add http://steamcommunity.com/id/extvauction every weapon helps!!
Your best bet is to turn the hats into metal/keys, as they’re the general ‘currency’, and then to sell them. Selling hats individually is tough work, especially when such a hat is only a normal one.

Put trades up and just use those market prices. If you explain the cause, maybe more people will be interested in donating or buying. I’d be more than willing to help out with this (setting prices, setting up the trades, using proper grammar), but I don’t see it earning a significant amount any time soon.

Well what i was gonna do shintaz is sell hats and stranges by the backpack in an auction format, starting at like 20-30 dollars for 90 hats and then letting bidding commence on the steam forums for a few days
These would be sorted into groups so
Extv Hat Backpack #1 – Bidding starting @ 30 dollars
Extv Strange Weapon Backpack #1 – Bidding starting @ 10 dollars
Then we will list the winners and tell them to add the relevant accounts in a pm

I want everyone to know that at this time, this is not an extv sponsored or ran drive/event. We will be talking with the parties involved to determine cost/benefit analysis and other things before we decide on how involved we are going to be.
Of course, you are all welcome to give him your stuff so he can sell it and he promises to then give the money to the fund. I have no reason not to trust the guy, just wanted to be clear that the title is, at this time, misleading.
This is coming from someone with a decent amount of experience in TF2 trading Chaplain:
That is not the best way to go about it.
I know your intentions are good and I wish you the best of luck with it.
