Talking out of One's ASS

I just wanted to point out something that made me cringe lately from forum posts, resupply.eu and people talking on mIRC. There are others, but I haven’t the time to write them all now.
Pain in my ass 1 -> The excuses already flying around in division 1. My personal favourite is, “We don’t care about ETF2L because there is no prize money.” After reading those words my nostril hairs singed from the smell of bullshit. The following passage was taken from an interview with Dunc on resupply.eu
“I don’t really have any interest in placing second or third, I’m the kind of person that wants to place first and nothing else. Hopefully I instill the same attitude into my players.”
Now I’m not here to lick dunc’s arse, enough people do that already and besides, I think he’s a cunt. Believe me when I say this cunt, your team and the vast majority of div1 in ETF2L have exactly the same attitude as you. They just give this bullshit excuse as a scapegoat in case they lose, in the hope of protecting their ego’s. Now here’s why:
First of all, the prize money in TF2 amounts to fuck all. It sounds like a lot – say £750 (for arguments sake) – a reasonable prize for first place at a lan. However, by the time you’ve paid 6 players, the managers and the organisation, you’ve got say £100 for your individual efforts. £100 is dick all, I’d shit £100. If tf2 is seen as “work” to these people, they are getting a shit deal, because £100 for the sake of 100+ hour’s work isn’t good. 99% of div1 have more than 150 hours to their name. 99% of div1 have won less than £300 playing TF2. There are beggars getting more money than that. Of course, they aren’t playing this game for money. They play for fun and competition. I wouldn’t play this game week in week out, night after night for £100 once a blue moon. I play this game to have fun. I personally have fun when I win. I hate losing, but I can take it because I know it’ll make future victories more enjoyable. ETF2L is the biggest TF2 league in the world, with the biggest number of spectators. If you had any pride at all, you’d want to win this league. If the reasoning above doesn’t prove the top teams care about ETF2L, then these two links surely will.

No doubt, many of you will have laughed your ass off AT (not with) the kiddies pretending they don’t care already. However, it’s a great piece to prove my point.
The purpose of this post is to plead with the perpetrators to cut the crap. I’ll also add: don’t get put off watching matches between the likes of Pwr v TCM. I can promise you it will CERTAINLY be competitive as both teams are HUNGRY for wins.
P.s. Arsene Wenger v Alex Ferguson deja vu

There’s an amazing short story in Naked Lunch where the main character becomes able to articulate basic words with his anal sphincter. As it goes on his ass’s elocution becomes better and better. Then one day it grows some teeth. Then a mind of its own. Then a sticky membrane starts growing all over the man’s face as his asshole takes over control of his entire body.
Also, peace and love and cool happiness stuff.
Also, pro-gaming for money is a pretty dumb joke. Seen any UKeSA money yet anyone? :(

bragging rights, that’s all. There’s no money like you said so excuses such as “we’re not taking etf2l seriously etc etc” is nonsense
Jones I’m not trying to be a dick here but I’ve read that a couple of times through and I’m not 100% sure about what you’re saying.
If you’re trying to say that the age old “we don’t care about ETF2L because there’s no prizes” is bullshit then I 110% agree. ETF2L is the only important league in TF2 at the moment because it’s essentially the *only* league. This league, from my POV, decides which team is the best team in Europe.
Of course Power Gaming and Digniwank care about ETF2L. For literally years (2? :D) now their players – bybben and hymzi especially come to mind – have been whining about how TF2 is dead, how there are no LANs and how there’s no money.
Yet they’re still here, still competing for #1 place in only one league. That says it all.
LAN events are different – it costs money to go to those, so if there’s no prizes, it’s kinda pointless.
I don’t really think Moose believes that “ETF2L is worthless” bs, I think he’s just echoing the private thoughts of some of his players.
You understood what I said perfectly from reading your post. I used LANS as a comarison because the money involved in them is so petty. I could also have used EMS + ESL + ED
The players clearly “care” about this game. The LANS in this game are nothing worth caring about (lets hope that soon changes). In other words, this game is ETF2L.

Yeah I read it a few more times and it makes sense. It’s something that makes me giggle on a regular basis, really. There are players at the top of TF2, like the players I’ve previously mentioned, that could easily be earning some decent money in other competitive environments.
But, again, they’re not – they’re here :)
don’t generalise ?
and yes I also always lol when I hear diggy and powergaming claiming they don’t care about etf2l .. it’s quite obvious they do

This will never change, it’s always been like this. At the height of 1v1 q3 pretty much every player would go on record saying they haven’t had much time to practice recently, and they still do. It’s an ego thing.
I guess it’s more to do with the intentions rather than the raw sum of money. I appreciate a tournament with prizes a lot more than a tournament without any.
If people direct their attention to the leagues that hand out bigger prizes, competition between the leagues is bound to happen, but before that TF2 just needs more coverage for leagues to fight for. Boycotting leagues that don’t do much to advance sponsorships isn’t that bad of an idea in my opinion.

öööh, no.
Of course when people say “we don’t care care about etf2l/tf2” and still play it, it’s mostly bs. Everyone who plays a game competitively tries to do his best and win.
Ultimately though we, dignitas atleast, play this game for the lolz. We enjoy playing with each other etc. etc. The “we don’t care” argument is thrown around lightly but mostly it just means that we won’t play tf2 “Vale-style” 4 hours a day, five days a week (anymore). If our casual playing at this point wont be enough to take us to the top, then so be it. “We don’t care.” :)
This is just a pc game. Losing EMS to Vale! wasn’t the end of the world and if we don’t win etf2l this season, I’m not gonna cry myself to sleep either :D
too long, too confusing: Tf2 is fun. As long as it is fun, we will play it, but we wont sacrifice our “irl timez” for it anymore.
ps. whaddup with these serious topics as of late? :j

Good question, I think everyone woke up on the srs side of bed this morning. Oh well, makes for some interesting discussion at least.

I think it would be nice if the amount of prize money was a bit greater.
Now it is more or less a joke, even if it is nice that there are any prizes at all.
But large companies should be able to sponsor the league with more than a few thousand dollars or whatever the precise total amount is.
However, I agree completely that the attitude “I only play if I get payed” is quite arrogant.
If you don’t like the game anymore quit and find a job to resolve your financial problems instead of waiting for the league to do it. If money is the only motivation to play it is time to quit.
Some extra prize money can be a nice bonus to “spice things up”, but should not be the main motivation.
