I’ve just made my own community for Team Fortress 2, DeFrag eSports and we’ve got our own server – 24 slot map rotation no crits :)

We had rearranged the game to be played on the Sunday rather than the Monday, so I could go to a Rammstein concert. When 3 people didn’t show up I literally had no one else on my friends list to ask to play since we’d only been a team for about a month at that stage. I felt bad since you kept telling me to just get anyone, but I had no friends =(( Good times.
Used to play UKCS arena a lot before i started playing highlander. After that I started playing competitively.
The good old times with 24/7 lazytown, 24/7 MARIO_KART, 24/7 toy_fort, 24/7 orange_x3, 24/7 dm_store and 24/7 arena_ maps, those servers and communities probably had a name too…
A very small and niche community that me, lalli, hawku, wally (jamal in KS), gozo, ironhawk and kind of shep met over was Flixerines Sakura Arena (2009 – 2012). Both my first team and SOLAR happened because of that server
and damn dont forget UBERCHARGED, that was the most fun community that wasnt arena_ maps
more recently, since gladblad had to jump the ship (which was a shame) the only european one I play on now is GermanHQ

The Max-Play (http://forum.max-play.pl) community has some nice, active pub servers (http://www.gametracker.com/server_info/tf2ffa.max-play.pl:27015/) and boasted a competitive team which reached premier division (http://etf2l.org/teams/13891/) back in the day.

really like this server. love the class limits :)
Oh I was able to bring enough players from pubs to make 20 teams for a Portuguese League. (in 2 weeks). With the right arguments it is easy to bring players to the scene.
Nowadays pubs are dying, but we still have 2 active communities:

We also have a Counter Strike Global Offensive server and Battlefield 4 server. Active players in Minecraft, Space Engineers, and Company of Heroes.

http://www.gamingmasters.org has hosted some competitive players and teams (fun fact: the GM HL team played in a div with Kill Switch in its only season), though most of the old members no longer play tf2. We still have the best version of orange around though.
