While I do generally agree that humans are always better than a piece of metal, I think it is not the case here.
If a pickup chan like that actually got popular, the new guys / div 4-6 / fat kids will always stay fat.
First of all, let’s first see the pickup get that popular :D, 2nd of all, if the pickup get that popular, we will have concurrent pickups at the same time, giving other players a chance too. Also I gave more alternatives for anti-fatkidding in my other post that I linked to.
Also, I think its safe to assume that a popular pickup chan would have too many players for one person to recognize and actually know their skill level Making captains pick teams is also something that requires more time/waiting.
People get to know people quickly. Especially players that perform well, they tend to get stuck in people’s minds. You don’t have to know who’s bad, just who’s good, so that the good players get picked first and devided evenly.
And again, let’s see the pickup become this popular first? Currently you can be added for a full day and no pickup will start.
Your argument that a pickup chan should not require auth is not an argument. People need to identify themselves,
Why? I think I explained that it’s not neccesary.
and auth / Q allows it so. Who doesn’t have a Q account? and even if you don’t, it takes less than 2 minutes to sign up and add the auth to Remote so that you auto-auth upon connection.
Look, from my personal standpoint, I agree. IRC is easy, Q is easy. We’re talking about lowering the bar. There’s even a significant amount of pretty good players who don’t play pickups because “I dont use irc”. Using IRC is is a barrier, having to know how to use auth is another barrier, even if it’s not that big. The more barriers we can remove, the better.
TF2 lobby requires you login. ETF2L requires you login. Should we make a new league that requires no login? I’m pretty sure 1/2 the players will be “Schocky”.
Skewed comparison, makes not much sense :P
You should give this balancing bot a chance, I think you will be surprised.
Like I said, I’m welcoming it, I just think a captain system trumps the other systems by a step.

This really just begs the question “what of the bad players?” sure players that perform well get remembered, but what about those who are not? as much as I believe you trust people and are willing to give people a chance (or 10) I don’t think many others will. You may just be the select 1% who tolerates all players, but if for example I happen to underperform under a captain, what do you think will happen? when other captains ask each other about my performance, I hardly think “give him a chance” is ever even going to cross their minds. I do know what will though: he’s shit, don’t pick him. I’m not saying you’re wrong, but you need to look in the perspective of those who are genuinely bad and are trying to improve. sure you may not have the problem, and neither will players who are recognized publicly, but you need to broaden your thinking beyond self-belief that implies all humans are as nice as you. (I do genuinely believe all humans should be as nice as you :D)
