Suggestion to anyone looking for a new TF2 server

I was just chatting with someone about this in regards to upgrading my own dedi, and then it kind of hit me. http://www.kimsufi.co.uk/ks/ . That Kimsufi 16G, that dedi can quite comfortably run 8 TF2 servers. Personally I don’t really have any interest in getting Pixel Gaming running again due to the work and stress involved, but I thought it’d definitely be worth mentioning this. That server costs about £43/month (they don’t mention VAT), that works out at like £5.38 per 14 slot server with SourceTV, like properly QUALITY servers that won’t have performance issues ever. That’s not even counting the fact you can run mumbles, websites, etc, and even temporarily swap it for a CSS server or any like obscure HL2 mod as you please.
If anyone fancies getting together and buying it with some other people (say 6 groups get together, 2 of them have 2 servers, they can run websites and mumbles, everyone’s happy), I’d be happy to help you get and set up, and even just manage it for you for a straight up fee. Don’t even mind just showing people the basics of how to run this stuff (don’t expect me to to teach you how to use linux/windows server :P ).
Anyways, it was just an idea. I’m not looking to set it up for people or actually sell servers, but if you get a few people together and come to me saying “hey, we’re going to buy this” i’d be happy to help.
Not to say this is the best idea for everyone, there’s a lot of work/learning involved, and it’s effectively the computer equivelant of DIY housework.
tl;dr: Really cheap dedi servers around atm, works out at £5.40/month-ish per 14 slot server, plus you can run mumbles and stuff.

If eight teams contact me, I will consider doing this. See me at #christf2, I won’t accept people I don’t know on Steam.
– not choosing weak administrator/root passwords and giving them out to others
– some shell stuff, won’t always need GUIs (copying files, installing sw…)
but in all seriousness, there’s probably 9001 tutorials on the internets on how to install source servers/mumble/websites/whatever, it’s a rather easy process imo.
edit: oh, and also, you need to learn to pay them on time, right, Skyride? :DDD

c’mon ppl get your servers from chris. 2/8 are gone, we need 8/8.
Might be interested.

just out of curiosity : what do you need to learn when running a dedi box? :)
It’s mainly getting your head around using a computer with ONLY command line. It’s not difficult, it just requires you to re-think a lot of how you do things on a computer. Linux these days is pretty easy. Setting up a tf2 server is actually just a case of downloading the CLI steam tool, and running it, then running the TF2 server executable. The whole process can be condensed into a script pretty much.
To be honest though, if you weren’t up for it you can just a get a server with Windows Server 2003/2008 on it anyways, doesn’t cost that much more.

For the record, if we do do this, I will (hopefully) giving people a shell in a chroot jail with a screen session for the server, and FTP.
Question, I know that linode is being praised in the website-business side of things (that’s where I have my experience), but how will it handle game servers? http://www.linode.com
Pros / cons compared to that massive box?
What are the requirements to run, lets say, 2 servers? Which linode plans are capable of what tf2 requires?

I actually have quite a bit of experience with Linode, been using them on and off since before they even had UK servers available. Ignoring the fact UK isn’t ideal, It’s not a great idea to run TF2 servers on VPS’s. They don’t have as much CPU power available to them due to being on a VPS, and can often get really weird laggy FPS issues. That said, I have a UK one atm (expires at the end of the month) and I’ll happily set one up on there if you want try a few PCW’s on it.
Bassically, VPS = Not nearly as much CPU power as a normal dedi. Linode are DEFINITELY the best bet if you want to go with a VPS though. No one else is really close reliability/value for money.
Also, the difference between running a 12 player 6v6 and 18 player highlander in terms resource usage for a server isn’t that big.
Oh and the particular server, you’d need to the 2GB RAM version realistically, which costs bassically the same price as that big dedi, so you can see why I have a big dedi from OVH instead of a VPS from linode as my main server now. :P

Ah, thanks a lot for that information – now I know a bit more :-)
give this guy a try if you’re still open for options.

look him up on IRC and he can probably start a test server in no time.
