I don’t quite understand anything, does this mean that in the near future we wont have to record demos? :D
Sort of. I’ll probably make a video or something explaining how it differs from standard demos soonish.
Honestly though, all this is going to do is flood youtube with a fuck ton of entirely unimpressive TF2 clips. For anyone who actually makes proper frag movies, this update doesn’t change anything.
my understanding of this thing is that it only records a life, u press the button and it records that life. tbh i still prefer recording using prec, cant see that changing either.

Ye pretty much. The server automatically records a SourceTV demo of each life a player has on the server, and then you have the option to download that individual demo from the server (or “replay”). However it’s all hidden behind a shiny GUI so you don’t actually have to work about the technicalities.
Honestly though, I’m going to dig into it a bit more tomorow, but I’m a bit alarmed from what I’ve read so far about how this works. Afaik (and I could be wrong, which i fucking hope i am), they have added an actual web server to the TF2 dedi server. If that’s the case, it’s not even possible to express in words how fucking stupid that is when considered from a DDoS/stability/lag perspective.
edit: Also looking at the mail list, sounds like theres some new crash issues floating about pretty rampantly. Fairly sketchy on details though.

This has been in the beta for a while and should have a massive impact for frag movie makers if they’ve changed some things..
A) easier to edit demos now than previously
B) easier to make higher quality clips than previously
C) easier to.export etc etc
I experimented with it a little in beta and my only issue was that replays(demos) are on a per life basis rather than per map basis(makes it easier to pick out that one awesome moment but unless you can still record normal demos its gonna be a pain recording pov for games.)

Am I the only one who thinks that the current GUI is hideous? Including the main menu, backpack and this new replay system.

btw I dont think so there are some bugs now.
Valve has added some hats, only with a Class or hatless update we get a ton of bugs.
haven’t play yet. test it out tonight
