I wish for something like Pixel Pickups to come back

and with this thread I want to see if others want it, too.
y’see, my story begins with me talking a bit with Swifty and him inviting me to Pixel Pickups. From there on, I’ve learned a lot by playing with good players. This has helped me learn a lot more in a short time than I would’ve had by keeping on playing Lobby like I did all the months prior to that. I’m sure I’m not the only example of people learning a lot from “play with better players, learn from them” – of course that involves being eager to learn on your own end and constantly peskering the likes of Sneis, Hat and Joske about what they thought you did most wrong (that’s how it went for me, as I said). It helped. Lots.
I think others could benefit from something like this, too.
Now what do we have in the european scene? A mentor program that’s pretty much dead as far as I can tell (correct me if I’m wrong), attempts at segregation that I do understand since good players need to keep on playing against equally skilled ones to keep up on their level and… well, there’s MPUK #2 still running afaik, but nobody wants to use that because of the horrible horror that is Ventrilo (a PoS early 2000s VoIP program full of security holes and a huge lack of usability, in case you’re too young to have suffered from this shitstain that murikans love to use for some odd reason :P).
I hope this thread generates enough interest in something like what Pixel Pickups has been and was for me, I also hope this revigorates high-tier div interest in teaching the lower tier divs how to play so that the overall level of skill can rise and we have more people enjoying this game… because, at the end of the day, all of you have to admit that there could be more and there should be more people playing competetive TF2.
Edit: In case somebody proposes “Well just use tf2lobby.com” – while that is pretty much the easiest to use system it’s overrun by ragequitters, people not picking the class they said they’d pick, nobody playing medic and a huge fluctuation in skill level on a match-to-match base because there’s no way in hell to rank your team.

the reason why medium-level pickups died is because nobody wanted to play them. pickup2 is still going. tf2lobby is still going. one or the other of these fits the vast majority of the tf2 demographic, semi-competitive level pickups simply don’t have the people that want to play.
mentoring isn’t dead. i’m in the process of setting up mentoring for three people at this time.
let’s not lie, the higher divs were never interested in teaching the lower divs ‘how to play’, ‘how to play’ comes with time for anyone with common sense, and anyone who doesn’t have that common sense isn’t worth spending ludicrous amounts of time on to see no improvement. even besides that, most top level players don’t really have a lot of time or want to spend a lot of time teaching the lower divs the basics when the best way to learn is through doing. good things come to those who wait.
and pickup2 doesn’t use vent… we use mumble. dunno where you got that idea.

whilst the actual ‘mentor progam’ is dead there are still many throughout every division that will help you if asked.
I disagree with Chris with his statement of ‘nobody wanted to play them’. People wanted to play them just those that were above the skill of the pickup would take the piss with their usual elitist manners whilst they waited for pug2 to fill.

pu1 used vent. It’s a fair assumption

This, the amount of higher skilled players that just took the piss out of the place was kinda retarded.
I remember someone pissing about in one pickup, bumlicking his friends etc. Then when he couldn’t get on their team, started going all srs bsns and reported someone pissing about on our team.

They banned sword & shield @ pixel cause even people playing for shits and giggles dominated :(.
I would love to both get a mentor and be able to play pugs. my team isn’t all that active and sometimes when theres nothing else to do I just wish I had something that would help me develop to spend my time on. DM and lobbies get so boring, and practicing rollouts is a thing that you can do too much off. (mentor me as roamer btw :P)

yes, lets play something that is below OUR skill level that never started. Shame you couldn’t read my post before you spouted your sanctimonious bullshit to make yourself look smart.

What you have to ask yourself is “why did pixel pickup die”. People can sit and blame me all day for whatever with the bot, but the honest truth is there was 10+ pickups a day for the first month it was open, there must have been something good about it.
Truly, the issue was that people just got fed up of pickups and found mixes more fun. Now people are remembering the pickup days through rose tinted glasses and want that back. It’s bassically a “grass is always greener on the other side” kind of thing between pickups and mixes.
It can’t have been the fact that you let people play on extremely unreliable servers that lagged or crashed, weren’t updated for up to a week, banned regular players for bad reasons, didn’t ban irregular players after being reported, defaulted no votes to cp_waste and having a bot that crashed 25% of the time when a pickup started. Nah, can’t have been.
also none of the other admins gave a shit
also never updated the bot with things like !friend
i’ll just keep editing this when i think of stuff

At least he tried something, which is more than any of you can say. If you think the admins did nothing/things didn’t happen that needed doing you could’ve applied yourself, or talked it over with him and get shit done e.g. removing the inactive admins and bringing in active ones. Instead you sit here and whine about what went wrong.
