Strange FPS problem

Ok so, i had this fps problem about 2 weeks ago. One day i had fps_max 126 i.e. 125, and the next that started flickering between 117-128. This caused tearing on my monitor, and even when the fps is unlocked (fps_max 0) the game looks like garbage as the fps is crazy jumpy. The issue seems to be accross all Source engine games i.e. CSS and TF2 (fine in quake live).

I reformatted last week, and voilla my fps issue was fixed and it successfully locked on 125.

Then yesterday i installed;

* i-tunes
* dirt 2 + windows live update
* ventrilo 3

I then launched TF2 a few hours later to see my problem is back, screaming at both numlocked and Greg that my life absolutely sucks I proceeded to rage quit the server to uninstall all of the above programs. However the problem still exists.

HELP ME PLEASE!

**update**

FPS is not only fine in quake 3/quakelive, but it’s fine in CS 1.6 too

TF2 is just terrible optimization wise, you’ll have to deal with that! Have been noticing less and less fps with each update out.

But it was so perfect, with fps unlocked i hit 300, now it doesn’t matter what i set it too i get the same pattern

120 = 111-124
126 = 117-128
130 = 124-134

etc

xfire fraps or sum other overlay app?

btw using mmbl with source engine decreases fps by about 10%

none of the above, i’ve tried closing all of the background apps to no avail aswell!

Tried running tf2 with -autoconfig in launch options?

Yup, same result :(

Might be a recent source engine update, but let’s assume it’s not.

What other processes exactly do you have running?

I decided to test this, using snowies timedemo

run 1, without mumble running
5125 frames 38.553 seconds 132.93 fps ( 7.52 ms/f) 11.442 fps variability

run 2, with mumble running
5125 frames 38.958 seconds 131.55 fps ( 7.60 ms/f) 10.996 fps variability

less than 1 fps difference (effectively the same), If I could be bothered to do multiple runs i’d expect that there would be no difference between running mumble and TF2 and just running TF2 (at least on my rig)

The reason I didn’t do multiple runs of each test, is because having ran this test a lot, the differences between first and 3rd run, are never more than a few fps, well within the normal margins of error when testing (results with less than 2% difference are the same)

the details of my setup are here http://etf2l.org/forum/general/topic-10689/page-9/

nvc what GPU do you use, what revision of drivers, and do you run an FPS config

join a talking chan first

tf2 has 300fps aswell when ur the only one in the server

I’v never (ever) noticed an FPS drop when using mumble/TS/Vent, but I will test it later (on a busy mumble server)

If you have a slow computer, running mumble could drop your fps, just as any other program could.
If you have slow internet, being on a busy mumble server could indirectly cause fps drops, just as any other (online-) program could.

Just saying it isn’t necessarily mumble :)
