I wanted to reset to default configs, tried -autoconfig, didn’t reset properly. Some settings stuck at non-default and stuff. Disabled steam cloud, restarted steam and -autoconfig’d, didn’t work. Also deleted the team fortress 2 directory from steamapps, but didn’t help either. halp pl0x
Just reinstall the game.
Open Steam > Games > Libary > Right mouseclick on Team fortress 2 > Delete local content > Press OK
After finish > Install Team fortress 2 ;)
Sounds like an awful lot of hassle, but might aswell give it a try. Do you reckon I need to delete all the tf2 files aswell, or could I just c&p them back and forth?
before doing that, delete your autoconfig.cfg and config.cfg files from your computer. well you can move and/or rename them instead, it’ll have teh same effect while keeping your old files as backup.
try running TF2 after this, but restart TF2, and probably keep steam cloud off if not already switched off, otherwise steam cloud will jut add your old ones. ideally, this should give you new default files. When you put steam cloud back on, it should ask to use the old files or upload the new ones… obviously do the new ones or you’ll end up with your old ones and the problem starts again.
if you have some class config’s, be sure to delete them also, as the class configs may have some commands in them that are causing you problems.
Then try the delete local content thing to reinstall TF2, since just reinstalling will probably grab your old settings from steam cloud anyway and then you just wasted time redownloading TF2
All those files got removed when I deleted the team fortress 2 base folder from X:Program FilesSteamsteamappsaccount, so the config file has no way of actually being there when the game is launched. :E

copy and pasting will probably just cause you problems. if you copy and paste the old files, you’ll probably just get the same old problems. even if it’s just the gcf files, when i’ve done the copy and paste job with them before, bits of files end up going missing somehow and/or get corrupted, so you have to click the “verify files” thing, and then it ends up downloading most of the files anyway.
infact, if your having problems, do the verify files thing, then defrag the files, and then do all the other stuff, as doing that may fix small minor problems
u want a default config, So first off all Delete the game from your disk ( my last post)
After that, Delete the TF2 folder on your hard drive.
After reinstall, u will get a totaly clean game without issues.
If you dont wanna lose any Downloaded custom map like cp_gullywash,cp_obscure etc.
just make a copy of ur maps foldier in the tf directory.
The posts above are wrong — TF2 stores config data in more locations than just it’s own directory, and the data is persistent upon reinstall. Do the following if you want to reset TF2 (including HUD/whatever) completely to defaults:
1.) Delete /tf/ dir.
2.) Remove the following keys:
HKCU\Software\Valve\Source\tf\Settings
HKCU\Software\Valve\Steam\Apps\440
3.) You may also need to disable cloud specifically for TF2 to stop it putting back your old settings, to do so recreate HKCU\Software\Valve\Steam\Apps\440, add a DWORD called ‘Cloud’ and give it a value of 0.
edit: fucking etf2l removing my backslashes
