Regarding the div 5 or pro – it’s doesn’t have to be such extremes most players are middle class with degrees and professionals with a good or a very good income – they still want a competitive buzz and the PC is a convenient way to do it compared to stuff where you can break bones/have to drive a long way/get cold/twist your ankle etc.
Co-op gaming in all its forms is fun seems like L4D taps into that? Look at that piece of shit WOW, you get people in that who kill monsters calling player-versus-player gamers noobs. I guess that’s the new outrage of the next generation eventually everything will be a team of humans vs a computer controlled opponent and they will call themselves skilled and people who play against people in the usual FPS manner will be over-agressive dinosaurs :D
I think the main issue for the top players is that they have to invest a lot of time into constantly playing to keep up their skill level, and for nothing in return, the time can seem as if it’s being wasted. With a prize at the end, players are more likely to be committed and try harder. Hopefully this will be sorted in Season 4, with maybe some money/hardware/sponsorship prizes.
Although it’s been said, it’s also true that L4D is just benefitting from the initial surge of traffic. Lots of players have agreed with me that it’s fun initially, but after a while gets boring. I’ve seen this within our own team – we initially played it loads, but now hardly play it. And as I said earlier, it just won’t work competitively.
At the start of TF2 Kompaniet dominated, 4kings caught up and dominated, TCM caught up and dominated (for a v.short period of time), now we have 4kings, uber, TCM at a good enough level with CC VERY close behind them (if not equal to TCM and sometimes uber).
To me that states that the competitiveness (not sure if thats a word) of TF2 has increased as it’s not one team dominating the rest. 390 teams in season 3 of etf2l and the cup was full in what? 2 days?
The only real part of tf2 that either consider as dying would be the LAN scene, but trust me when I say when you see a few incoming announcements, that will change :P
Of course the stats favour fm09 and l4d, they’re new games, check how many of your steam friends are in either of them, probably the majority? Not many competitive players (from div5 upwards) play in pubs any more as they’re dire.
For the person who posted that they diddnt want to stick in div5 forever, find a team in div4 or 3 then? That doesn’t mean you have to staple your ability to HIGHLOL+ does it?
Every team thats in div1 at the moment has pretty much worked their way in to it. TCM were wotr, who have been around almost as long as 4kings, if not a couple weeks longer? they were in div2 for quite some time and only really took the step up last March/April , Uber were origionally 2x teams, Knights (a team that was in div2 and almost moving up to div1) and Syre/Excello, who again were div2 for a while and moved their way up. CC are a mix of UNi an ex 4kings, both those teams had to come from somewhere, etc etc etc etc etc etc…. :D
My point is, I can’t label tf2 as dead when etf2l has ~ 2,400 people signed up (minimum).
Finally, on terms of CSS, Salvo dominate absolutely everyone (before CGS died, not sure what their name is now), it’s not even close on skill between Salvo and the next best team – Reason Gaming.
Glad to hear your personal opinion, but it doesn’t mean that you’re correct. hf in l4d :)
L4D as a competitive game? Hah, what a joke. Good players usually want to be in control of what’s happening in the game. Even TF2 is too random for many ppl and L4D is extremely more so. L4D versus mode hardly requires any teamplay or skill. Most of the time it seems that the outcome is decided by luck and the timing of spawns and zombie waves. It was a fun game for a while but I got bored of it after a week or so.
TF2 does have a future. I doubt anyone will be earning salaries playing this game but I’m sure we’ll see good competition for many years to come.
Ok, sry for offtopic, but L4D (versus) requires alot of teamwork. I completly agree thats its way too random for competetive gaming, but its still highly teamwork-depended. If you havnt had a versus game with some friends and completly raped the survivors by some sweetly timed boomer/hunters/smoker attack, you havnt seen the beaty of L4D ;>.
Anyway, TF2 was the first game which actually made me quit cs1.6 completly after 9 years, i can’t see a so well-polished game die anytime soon.
Edit: Ok, just read the whole thread, and i guess i follow now. Fenrir, im sorry but you sound like the random newb whining over cs1.6 would die 5 years ago (or perhaps a guy bitter after he never found his div3 clan?). L4D is never gonna be a competetive game, unless theres released a pro-mod with no random respawn, which would kill the idea of the game. Every scene ive known have had some dominating team/player at some point, and its never lasted forever. People pick up on whats going on, and evolve. The competetive TF2 scene has grewn ever since it was established, and with valve still planing on more updates, the game will continue to get attention. I do agree that some well-orginised lans could pace up the speed even further, but as you can read, alot of things are happening behind the scene. My dearest wish is that valve pops out and make a grand tf2 turnament, but unfortunatly thats never been valves style. Lucky for us theres dedicated ppl around, and as long as they stay, i cant see TF2 die in any way. Great games like Farcry2/L4D/Fallout3 and w/e may draw ppl away for a while, but they’ll come back for the good ‘old’ tactical feel of TF2.
tf2 rocks, l4d rocks, tf2 deserves lans, l4d does too
L4D is gonna have prizemoney at i36.. whilst tf2 probably won’t have anything more than a tiered prize fund – whether or not that will be the only lan for it who knows… EA are probably going to put the money in for the L4D one (they are a distributer).. of course this is only rumour, but a little bird tells me that the dignitas medley team already have a team lines up. So if they are gonna take a team on for a game like that, im sure tf2 wouldn’t be that difficult to get into a ‘similar’ organisation as is happening time and time again (4k, drz, tlr[hmm]) etc, and i wouldn’t be that suprised if someone like dunc or wlv wrote a long winded proposal to EA to support a game they published by giving it some money for once, then they might actually do it, they are good at throwing money away
i simply suggest that people stop whining (like i have done in the past) and start doing something about tf2’s state, nervousgamers.com are kindly paying for 6 of our tickets at i36 with no guaranteed prize fund, big orgs will still take on teams, what do they lose? the only thing is u dont get to goto lans (4k for example) i’d be greatly appreciative if someone could influence some monies so i can say thanks to ragey for finding the funding to reimburse my ticket, and getting 5 more
As long as there are still classes to update, and a new one to be released, tf2 will keep on going (: and more players will come in on every free weekend @ the releases. I was one of them in the medic update.

L4D as an Esport Game is a FUCKING joke tbh , i laughed :p
“For the person who posted that they diddnt want to stick in div5 forever, find a team in div4 or 3 then? That doesn’t mean you have to staple your ability to HIGHLOL+ does it?”
Problem is, a div4 or even div3 team will almost never pick up a div5ish player, but a div5ish player will never improve to a div3/4ish level if he keeps playing in div5. Plus, I never stated myself to mid++++ or something ;)
If someone thinks money is their only motivation to continue playing I would recommend them to quit.
I see computer games and especially TF2 as something that should be funny, interesting and rewarding because of the gameplay. I don’t expect someone to pay me for investing my time in TF2. My improvents in skill is reward enough.
I can understand the problem for the top teams if there are too few teams capable of playing on the same or higher level than them, because then there are not enough possibilities for further improvments for them.
On the other hand there are quite a lot of active players and many of them seems eager to play at a higher level (just look at all “seek div2/div1 team” posts).
There seems to be need for more competetive teams with players willing to fight hard to get to the top. All clanless people should go together and form new teams. However, there seems to be a lack of leader-types willing to lead a clan and take responsibility. Everyone just seems to want to join a clan where all the hard work is done already.
“If someone thinks money is their only motivation to continue playing I would recommend them to quit.”
dont tell that to any koreans :x
Relentless – the high+ bit wasn’t directed at you but at other people in a similar situation :)
I guess the best way to find a team is approach them yourself, tell them who you are, your past experience, your aims. Most importantly be honest about your skill level..when I was cl of TLR nothing annoyed me more than pms from people claiming they are god.. The only pmer that got in was fragga and he was honest when he said his aim was good but be needed to work on certain things..
Anyway, pm as many div4/3 teams as you can, even if they say they’re full offer to merc for them if ever they are short one night. Eventually you will get a chance to prove yourself..gl
unfortunately the mentality that to progress players have to ‘move on’ is slightly detrimental. Ofc some players are in the situation where their clan plays rarely has little commitment or doesnt have a competitive agenda. BUT we see too often that clans are some sort of ‘template’ that you have to outgrow to progress. This should really be the case as it leaves some clans doomed from progression. If your in a clan with dedicated players it shouldnt be hard to progress with the clan.
