Dust off your old MS mouse

There was a thread a few moths ago with the aim to find a lightweight mouse, without prediction and acceleration issues, that can (actually) track properly. We failed…and it was pretty much concluded by Koeitje having to buy a discontinued Razer Krait SE AVA http://img706.imageshack.us/img706/7653/kraitavase.png from bloody Wapanesia (southeast of Hungarussia) to get something decent.

Well, guess what?! I found three of them: Mouse Wheel Optical, Intellimouse Explorer 1.1, and Intellmouse 3.0. http://img17.imageshack.us/img17/6351/msmice.png You wouldn’t believe they can still keep up, but it turns out they can still be put up to par with todays standards by increasing the polling rate, thereby solving the two problems they struggle with in their original setup, latency and tracking speed.

Esreality bring it up in their great mouse test of 2007. Originally, the mice have a polling rate of 125hz, a tracking speed on 1 m/s and a latency of 8 ms(latency=1/frequency). A frequency above 250hz increases the tracking speed to 1.5 m/s and the they supposedly run without problems at 1000hz. However, the general consensus is that a frequency of 500hz is a more viable option from a stability and durability point of view, especially since the gain from 500hz to 1000 isn’t very significant. A frequency of 500hz and 1000hz gives a latency of 2 and 1 ms respectively.

How to do it: You can modify the registry directly but there is some nifty software to spare you the trouble. I used hidusbf to set the rate and mouserate to verify that it did as I intended. There are others, search. Remember to untic the box in mouserate, or it may not display the numbers correctly.

In conclusion: I’ve owned all these mice in the past and I’m currently using a wmo@500hz. It’s the best mouse I’ve had since i loved my 3.0 to death back in 2005. I’ve found they track just as well as my krait, salmosa, abyssus(herp-a-derp-we-made-a-mouse-that-jitters-like-fuck-and-pretend-nothing’s-wrong) or db3g. They are also still very popular in the quake pro scene. If they fit your criteria, check them out.

NOTE: I do not take responsibility for any damage you may cause to your hardware. Whatever you do, do it at your own risk. Also, the above applies strictly to the wmo, imo 1.1 and im 3.0, other mice may now respond as well to overclocking.

left – old 3.0a, 2002-2009, everything ok except random switching off while playing tf2, re-plug in revives it :( i’m using it on my laptop
right – new 3.0, lmb already misclicking, side buttons dangle around a bit :

both works well on 500Hz, but overall quality of new 3.0 gen is down compared to old 3.0 :( and still it’s a great mouse for mid sensitivity.

id still use my 3.0 but I cant seem to increase the polling on vistax64

unless you know how?

OMG i’m using a intelliMouse 4.0 explorer mouse. I like it anyways

My IE3.0 works just fine, in spite of double, sometimes triple click trigger when I press LMB. Wouldn’t use FaN with it, but scatgun works fine.
Also, you can also use usbmrs11.exe to change the polling rate.

RareSpycrab

Really? They had the wheel mouse optical in my school lol. They where giving them away when they got new mice in.

From hidusbf readme:
“This driver/program is intended to “overclock” USB mice under Windows 98
through XP x64, Windows Vista 32 bit,
Windows Vista 64 bit (with disabled driver signature enforcement).”

Don’t they have like a shitload of negative accel at high speeds?

I have an intellimouse 3.0 and couldn’t be happier. :) Haven’t heard of there being any negative accel and I don’t feel any unless I’ve gotten used to it

I noticed some occational negative acceleration when I first swithed back to imo1.1 from abyssus with the default polling rate, but it wasn’t a big issue. With a frequency of 500hz I have no problems whatsoever. I can do quick rocket jump flicks with ease @40cm/360deg. A few specs for comparison:

Krait: Up to 40 inches per second
40*0.0254=1.016 m/s

DeathAdder, Abyssus, Diamondback 3G: 60 to 120 inches per second
60*0.0254=1.524 m/s
120*0.0254=3.048 m/s

I have no idea what motivates this interval, I had more problems with negative acceleration while playing with the db3g than my wmo. My abyssus worked fine in that sense though.

Oh, and all these MS mice share the same sensor.
