To hell with screenshots, integrate logs!

I can see the benefits and possible fun stats you can get out of it. For instance, player of the season can be based on the log stats instead of circlejerks. And it motivates individual players and teams to outdo themselves if they need additional damage, to become the best scout/soldier/medic of their division. It would be easier to spot upcoming talent too. But it will be one hell of a project for ETF2L… Maybe nice summer project for a happy talented programmer, when things are slow.

3. Logs can be faked even more easy than screenshots…
What, why?
Seems like theres a hell of a lot of effort going into faking some logs where faking a screenshot of status & getting your friends in the server could be fairly easy

[…]Yes, SteamID’s are shown in the logs.
EDIT:
For some reason, ETF2L forum thought some bits of the line as HTML tags. Here.
Then how the fuck is it easier to fake a log than a screenshot?
A screenshot can easily be doctored, only the devs on logs.tf have that kind of power over a log.

Eh? A log file is just text.. anyone can edit it before uploading it..

Yeah, editing some steam-ids and dates takes a dramatic amount of knowledge.

You can just take the logs of some other match played, and replace player names and steamid’s with Notepad or any favourite text editor of yours.

rofl.. you just change numbers in the .log and upload it… thats all it takes…
http://logs.tf/13003 in like 2min

Fair point actually, but the time & date would have to sync up so it wouldnt be as easy as youre making out

the idea of having logs actually isnt bad, but etf2l would need to parse the logs with logaddress_add instead of ppl uploading their own, then it would be great
same as in esea
Last edited by AnimaL,
Log files being so simple to edit is the whole reason etf2l decided to require screenshots so many years ago.
Sure, you can fake those too. And then the opponent can contest, and then you have 6 screenshots against you. Whereas with log files, you only get 1 per game, and it’s owned by whoever owns the server.
Log files are a nice addition, no more.

That’s exactly what I’m saying, the best option would be a plugin that directly uploads logs and match results to etf2l, but that wouldn’t be easy to code I guess.
An oficial plugin for etf2l that is mandatory on all servers for official matches, that plugin would ensure the config and whitelist was always right, it could upload logs and results to etf2l and even keep a track of who’s a merc and who’s not, Idk, but the potential sounds amazing.

So, instead of catching cheaters you think ETF2L admins should spend their time on making you able to upload logs? Not only is this EXTREMELY useless, it is also a breach of integrity as the log files contain chat messages from the game. But let’s have it your way, let’s have hackers running around freely because the admins are spending time coding this useless crap instead of watching POV demos. I don’t want to accuse anyone of anything, but perhaps that’s the entire idea of it; YOU want the admins to be busy while you’re installing some kind of shady plug-in?
Not sure if troll, but that’s kind of a flawed argument…
The AC team and the dev team have an entirely different set of people and abilities, if you want to help catching cheaters I’m sure you can ask the admins to trial as an AC team member, shocky left recently and I heard they don’t have that many people available so maybe you could lend a hand?
I’m not really on par with everything but I’m sure top of the list for the dev team atm would be a complete site design and interface overhaul. After that, the goal should be towards a more professional looking league, and I assume getting some tasks automated would be a great help in that department.
I don’t really see how anyone could ever hope to get away with faking logs (at least significantly). Can someone posit a scenario where a team can hope to get away with this? I just don’t buy it.

If there’s no automated plugin to upload it directly it could be faked sure, but yeah I see no point in faking it, obvious fakes would be contested and the consequences would be harsh I would imagine.
Same with screenshots actually, I can blatantly fake a match result, just open ps cs5 and voilá, 5 mins later we got a screen, but thats not how it works. It would be contested obviously

On a serious note…
Log upload is a not an option without a ETF2L server plugin to ensure log integrity to some degree.
Making log upload mandatory is not an option unless said ETF2L server plugin is required for all matches. Both for the purpose of log integrity and ease of use.
Streaming logs is, again, not an option without a ETF2L plugin. Logs must be snipped to contain only info relevant to matches, and only to valid ETF2L matches – otherwise the server load would be unimaginable.
