Excuse me for my ignorance but I still can’t get over the fact that a programmer comes up with the argument that there are problems because his script uses a different comression method.
I never said there are problems. I’m just agreeing with OP that if etf2l allowed to upload files other than .rar and .zip it would simply be easier. If they don’t implement this minor feature, I wouldn’t be that bothered, to be honest. It’s just that it’s a simple thing to do and, as compton confirms, it would make the upload system easier to use.

Good luck with such an attitude in your job.
Thanks, you too… (seriously, what?)

Anyway you prove yourself with the fact that you think 7z is able to uncompress any format available.
I didn’t say that, but I see how you could think I did. “winrar or 7zip” should’ve said “winrar and 7zip”.
Quoted from Norris
Oh and just because you need to keep your files doesn’t mean to have to upload them here as well.
Indeed, but as I said it’s a minor feature change that is in no way the big deal you’re making it to be.

your 10GB of (broken) demos.. .
Every single one of my demos works fine, thank you very much :)
Seriously, calm down and read what compton said. There is absolutely no need for any sort of discussion regarding this MINOR feature request.
Why is Norris basically saying what I said but in a completely ragey manner even after me obviously just misunderstanding what you guys meant?
Give any file a .zip/.rar extension…
(like: myfaildeaths.bz2.rar)

No, they don’t.
You have a program on windows that reads it, you have a program on osx that reads it and you have a program on linux that reads it. And without those programs on those operating systems, you wouldn’t be able to read them. Apart from maybe .zips on windows (even though explorer isn’t an os as such, ill admit it confuses the lesser gifted).
No they do it natively. I’m 100% sure of it. Out of the box they read 7z.
They come with a program that reads it.
RAR on the other way…

Tried this now and can confirm that it doesn’t work. Well, the uploading bit worked, but they weren’t approved and never appeared in the demo section.
Did anyone do a proper test? I mean a real test comparing the sizes of a compressed ZIP archive and a compressed 7Z archive of several demos (to have a statistically relevant spread)?
Until then, I won’t believe anyone saying that 7Z offers an improvement for demos.

You’ve missed the point. It’s not about superior compression, it’s about the ease of use of the uploading system.

both using default settings (zip is using deflate method, which is pretty much standard)
Another feature request, make it possible to upload demos with Chrome

since you apparently use a script (and one can never underestimate the feeblemindedness of people around here), have you tried passing it as application/x-rar-compressed in addition to just changing the file name?
all bets are off

wat
The whole script thing is entirely unrelated to the attempt to upload a file for which I had manually modified the extension.
Besides, for as far as I’m aware, uploaded demos are checked by admins manually, so your suggestion wouldn’t have made a difference anyway.
