Yes, but, once again:

allowing different file formats to be uploaded is a) a minor adjustment and b) easier for the users.

does fuck with the idea of standardisation though. I do think more people should go over to LZMA though, it’s significantly better for compressing files like this than rar or zip (deflate method).

I think I can speak for the admin team when I say it’s a good idea to support as many file formats as possible. Not only it is more convenient but it also would save some bandwidth.

And as to what Chris is saying, he knows his stuff about compression algorithms, but we’re not here to standardize or educate about compression but to serve the players with an easy-to-use league site.

It’s just a matter of getting it done and to be fair, it’s a minor feature so it’s probably not the first thing on the list.

On the subject of standardisation (sp?), all my demos (50gb at least) are bz2’d and archived into folders etc. It’s all very neat because I’m weird like that. If I had to change everything to zip/rar/whatever, I would first take a week trying to get over the fact I have to actually change everything, and then another week of actually doing it.

Is bad.

Edit: By 50GB obviously I mean 10GB. Minor overguesstimation! :D

Surely if there are more formats that people can upload, then the admin team and the rest of the people that want those demos will have to go to more of an effort to find the correct program to extract it, where as if it’s all one/two formats that can be opened by WinRAR and 7Zip, then it would make everything much easier.

Name a format that winrar or 7zip do not open.

I don’t know any to honest, I’d have to go home and look at the list that 7Zip gives me. I’ve never heard of Chris’ mentioned format though, and yours rings a bell but I don’t recall 7Zip having anything to do with it. Like I said I’m only stating my opinion, I’m not debunking anyone else’s.

And I’m just saying that nobody on etf2l will use a format that winrar or 7zip does not support, in reply to your “it will make it harder to admins having to use more than 2 (two!!) programs!” :)

So allow people to upload everything that’s openable by 7Zip/Winrar, no problem.

I’m glad you agree.

you are confusing a filetype with a program.

Except the only program capable of encoding rar is winrar since the algorythm is proprietary.
Also 7zip do use its own algorythm.

[…]

that’s not correct.

It is.
My windows reads it, my os x reads it and my linux reads it.

No, they don’t.

You have a program on windows that reads it, you have a program on osx that reads it and you have a program on linux that reads it. And without those programs on those operating systems, you wouldn’t be able to read them. Apart from maybe .zips on windows (even though explorer isn’t an os as such, ill admit it confuses the lesser gifted).

I don’t care about the algorithm, it’s just that I’ve got a script that downloads our stv’s off our server and bzip2’s them. Not a big deal to uncompres and then compress again, but allowing different file formats to be uploaded is a) a minor adjustment and b) easier for the users.

Uum I don’t get what Spike tries to point out here. If YOU really wrote such a script then is shouldn’t be hard for you to either modify it or just write a script to uncompress/recompress/upload it to this page here. And how is it in any form easier for users if they need to install several compression programs just to watch a demo file? And.. let me be rude… what makes you actually think that anyone is interested in your demo file?

Btw it’s also not really a good idea to allow all kind of formats and compressions if the admin team ever plans to roll out some kind of demo check for the top divisions.

If you’ve had taken a second to read the rest of the thread you may have learned that:
– you only ever need winrar or 7zip to extract ANY file
– the point I made was merely an example
– I don’t know who would be interested in my demo file, but the etf2l rules say I have to keep them for at least 2 weeks

Get a clue.

(ps you’re also completely missing the point of this thread)

Norris

Excuse me for my ignorance but I still can’t get over the fact that a programmer comes up with the argument that there are problems because his script uses a different comression method. Good luck with such an attitude in your job. Doub’t you’ll be missed :>D Anyway you prove yourself with the fact that you think 7z is able to uncompress any format available.

Oh and just because you need to keep your files doesn’t mean to have to upload them here as well. Just think about it. There’s no need to un- and recompress your 10GB of (broken) demos.. .
