Can any PC setup run TF2 at a consistant 120fps with any config?

The game is like 5 years old now and with a computer roughly 7-10x faster than the recommend spec, it still dosnt hold a consistent 120fps! the bottleneck seems to be the cpu.

Is there any cpu/ram/gpu/config combination that allows tf2 to have a consistent 120fps for 6v6? mine can keep a consistent 200 in most places, but mid fights it goes up and down as low as 70 -80ish, i can run BFBC2 at a more consistent frame rate than this!

(please don’t give your opinions on whether YOU think you need 120 fps, or what the eye can detect or tick rate etc)

Cheers

A demo that would serve as reference / stresstest would be nice.

I guess a high-end processor and gpu will be able to reach 120+ fps in the majority of the game. Though I’m not sure if you can totally avoid the short fps drops.

Any quadcore intel core i5 or core i7 should do the trick.

Vazzan

TwistedPlay.

i7 + 6950, have capped at 140 FPS, never seen it drop below

DarkSlayer

i have a 3.4Ghz quad core, any1 with a quad core load up a random demo from a 6v6 badlands for example i used a match between Epsilon eSports vs Button Bashers ( ‘http://www.vanillatf2.org/demos/?type=2&map=cp_badlands&team=’ 3rd option down)

here is the stress test (i did first 120 secounds of the demo):

Frames, Time (ms), Min, Max, Avg
22435, 120000, 71, 419, 186.958

at mid it drops to around 70 to 100 and goes up and downalot

Try turning on multithreading.

DarkSlayer

here are my multi threading settings:

cl_threaded_bone_setup “0”
cl_threaded_client_leaf_system “0”
mat_queue_mode “-1”
r_threaded_client_shadow_manager “1”
r_threaded_particles “1”
r_threaded_renderables “1”
r_queued_decals “0”
r_queued_post_processing “0”
r_queued_ropes “1”

iv tested every single one and all the diffrent combinations and these are the best for my set up

if any1 can provide proof (fps timedemo or summit) they can get a solid 120 at mid i would be gratful

The game recommended specs is for non-comp standards, 40-70fps should suffice the recommended specs so you can’t really blame that.
Which model of CPU are you using?

i was just using the recommended specs as referance, i know they are far off what i actually needed. AMD phenom II X4 945 @ 3.4Ghz, i just want to buy a setup that will let me run tf2 at a constant 120fps!

I’m running a Phenom II x4 955 @ 3.3Ghz (pro overclock), and I have my fps capped at 170, never saw it drop in 6v6s at all.
I’m running chris config (any of em deliver a constant fps for me). How much RAM and what GPU you using?

Norrland3000

Intel 2600K got that covered for you. I never drop under 120fps. If you drop under 200 just overclock.
