Highlander Season 18 Preseason One Night Cup

With the dust settled on Season 17, let’s start the preparation for Season 18! This one night cup will focus around testing maps for the upcoming season as well as a new whitelist!

Whitelist changes:
- Unbanned the Spycicle
- Unbanned the Reserve Shooter
- Banned the Detonator
The whitelist for this cup can be found here.
Maps:
- pl_vigil_rc4 – This map is being tested as a potential replacement for pl_badwater
- koth_lakeside_final – This map is being tested as a potential replacement for koth_warmtic_b6
- cp_alloy_rc3– This map is being tested as a potential replacement for cp_steel
Each tier is divided into round robin groups of four teams meaning there could be multiple groups for each tier, teams that sign up sooner will be prioritized in getting a spot in the cup, so do not wait until the last minute to sign up! Keep in mind that there will not be any elimination rounds for this cup.
- Signups close: February 15th at 21:00 CET
- Group stage round 1: February 16th 19:00 CET – pl_vigil_rc4
- Group stage round 2: February 16th 20:30 CET – koth_lakeside_final
- Group stage round 3: February 16th 21:15 CET – cp_alloy_rc3
Both pl_vigil_rc4 and cp_alloy_rc3 will be played as a bo3.

vigil instead of badwater is good, but fuck those other two, we need more maps that arent just huge sniper sightlines and iirc lakeside is possibly the most wide open map there is, also i really dont get why you want to replace the only map that rewards team coordination with a map that is likely just gonna be like gravelpit where you give no fucks about one point but hold the other one

I’m down for vigil and I hate warmtic but isn’t there a better koth map to try than lakeside? like synthetic or bagel or even ramjam idk
also a bit torn because steel and badwater are iconic maps in my opinion, it’s difficult to imagine the league without them. IMO the best solution would be to make a simplified badwater_pro that only adds forward spawns and widened stairs in the “dispenser spot” on 3rd
Honestly this map selection has never been better for a redeployment of a 7 week season than this. Alloy and Vigil are both up to par; you can easily have an Alloy week or a vigil week imo. You’ve lakeside as a guarenteed HL favourite and hey, honestly, if we could ever do 7 weeks ago with enough teams, I bet u people would pay into Process or GPT or Lakeside as one of the maps needed

I have a strong feeling that etf2l admins are just highlanderphobic and they want to kill hl.
At last, we get a Preseason Cup for HL! I’m interested to try out the selected maps, bans and ubans seem reasonable too. I do hope that the opinion of the vast majority of the active HL scene will outweigh the problems of one pyro main complaining to the admins about a weapon; how about public polls about bans/unbans and map feedback, just like a vote was enabled fot the S17 Players of the Season?

if that map cp_alloy_rc3 is going to replace cp_steel the end of tf2 is near
Also, I feel like we should try out ” cp_upland ” (https://tf2maps.net/threads/upland.17585/) it’s probably the best map to replace steel with if we want to do that, but yeah it sure needs to be playtested.

I like all of these weapon (un)bans. As much as I dislike the Detonator’s afterburn, I don’t think it needs to be banned if you unban the Spy-cicle though. The afterburn is extremely annoying but it does take away the ability to clear traps and all the little jumps you can do with it as well.
Steel is better than Alloy, but I don’t mind testing Alloy for the 3rd/4th time.
Replacing Badwater with anything is good. I’ll play 2Fort over it.
Replacing any of those three koth maps is good. Could have trialled a map like koth_synthetic maybe.
@gamma: we changed HL from a 7 week season to a 5 week season so we can have 3 instead of 2 seasons each year… which means you have one week regular season and a playoff round of HL more each year than before the change. Unfortunately 3 7 week competitions (+playoffs) don’t fit into the schedule.

The main argument of those who want badwater gone is that the third point is unpushable, which is not true. There are plenty of ways to do it as it’s been showcased time & time again, last season included, in both prem and other divisions.
It’s simply not a strong enough argument for removing a map that’s been a staple in HL for the entirety of its existence. And replacing it with an infinitely inferior map is disrespectful.
If you’re that bothered by the third point, there is a _pro version that is much easier to play in offence.
tl;dr: vigil’s bad, l2p badw, try _pro version in the cup.

I’m not for or against removing badwater, but the argument to keep badwater because it’s ‘an iconic /staple map’ is just stupid. If more than half of the hl community prefers another map over badwater it shouldn’t stay in the map pool just because it has been played every season.
Just look at the current 6s season. After a poll, badlands/prolands was removed for a newer map even though it was played for 30 consecutive seasons. Maybe it would be good to have a map poll for hl as well after the preseason cup to see everyone’s opinion.
The burgers made twelve pro versions of Badwater and they still don’t want to play it in UGC or RGL.
I’m pretty sure there was already a poll like that last season by the way, although it was only among prem players.
@TimTum, I never said it should be kept because it’s a staple map, I said that removing such an iconic map for an obviously inferior one is wrong. I should have been clearer, my bad.
I was gonna write out all my arguments, but then I realised I didn’t care enough unless people want me to.
1) Alloy is shit, try GPit instead if you want to replace steel.
2) Vigil is shit. Try _pro if you want to replace stock badwater.
3) Process is shit. Don’t replace gullywash.
4) I prefer lakeside, but both lakeside and product are shit. Personally, -product -coalplant +gpit. Keep warmtic
5) Either ban both detonator and spy-cicle, or ban neither.

I thought the pro version of badwater was almost…good i feel only third needed a change but the whole map feels diffrent in the pro version like allowing everyone to walk into backstairs and yeet every one under without a sniper sightline watching which makes it almost the predicted way blu will push will be from there i dont know just some stuff i saw in this map i dont think anyone will care.

@stinghan I like it to, but unfortunately you can’t have one 5cp, and two KotHs in a season as that is 1.5 week’s worth of maps, so coalplant had to go too in that case :(
i somewhat like lakeside and even vigil, but replacing them with badwater and warmtic…i am not so sure about it
steel is fine, one of the best hl maps, no need to replace it imo

Vigil is kinda good map what was used in ugc and should be a good change for badwater.
As far as I got in comments nobody wants to play alloy including that.
In my opinion steel is the best map for highlander bc it shows what team are braindead 6s players and what teams actually has brain
Lakeside is pretty good and admins did a right thing replacing it with warmtic bc both maps are huge for sniper but warmtic is op bc of big highground and plenty spots.

Lakeside just isn’t a good map for 6/9 classes and when playing it’s obvious.
And while alloy is good steel is just such a good map that replacing it is just silly.
I also think that one of the unbans is dumb but I won’t stay what one.
And the det ban is a little silly as it’s not that broken, it’s just annoying. Just like the pyro class :).
