All the information regarding the coming Season can either be found in this newspost, or will be released shortly!
The whitelist for the season can be found here with its only change being that the Spy-cicle has been banned.
For tiers we’ll be aiming to run swiss again for Open and Mid while removing Low. This is still potentially subjected to change depending on the final signup numbers.
Season Schedule
- Signups: October 28 – November 9th Signups, 21:00 CET (Premiership signup deadline is November 4th 21:00 CET)
- Publishing of Provisional Divisions: November 9
- Publishing of Final Divisions: November 10
- Pre-Season Playoffs: November 5 – November 10
- Main Season: November 11 – December 16 (5 Weeks)
- Playoffs: January 7 – January 20
If you intend to sign up for the Premiership Division we encourage you to do so as soon as possible due to the Premiership Qualifiers. We will only consider teams for the Premiership Qualifiers that signed up before November 4th Signups, 21:00 CET. Additionally we expect teams without a guaranteed Premiership Division spot to be able to play all of the days mentioned above. This will be in order to have a double elimination stage for the Qualifiers to determine the best of the best teams for the Premiership Division.

Sign-up Process
Division 1 and 2 remain in place instead of High Tier for Season 17. Teams looking into playing in either of these divisions will need to sign up to High tier when signing up for the season. If teams would want to specify to which of these Divisions they want to be placed in, we strongly encourage teams to send in an application to us with the said method below.
Make sure to choose your desired tier when signing up for the season in the sign-up process. If you created a new team, feel free to apply for the tier you believe you deserve you should be in. To prove you are capable of the tier you applied for, we require you to submit screenshots or logs of results from your recent practice matches or tournaments where you scored decent results against teams that play on the level you aim for, send an application to [email protected] (details listed below) with a suitable subject. Emails with subjects like “Hello”, “Hi” or anything else that cannot be identified as a team applying for a tier by mail may be ignored. Teams signing up for the high division are advised to send an email whether they have a preference to either play division 1 or 2. If no email is send by a team signing up for high they will get placed by admins based on the roster of the team.
Additionally, since it happens time and time again, you do not sign up by mail, you sign up on the site and apply by mail if you are a newly formed team playing in anything higher than Open.
The quantity of screenshots or logs is not the most important factor in this case, it’s more of a helpful measure for us to figure out if your team will be able to keep up with the pace. There is no magical, minimum or maximum number of screenshots or logs that you have to submit.
When sending links to logs on logs.tf or similar it is highly recommended that you include a short explanatory comment for each linked log, e.g. who your opponents are supposed to be and where they played last season. Also helpful for us, but not a must, however, is adding who the opposing team is in each screenshot or log (and maybe even the division they played in the last time). That makes it easier for us because sometimes it can be quite hard (especially in the lower tiers) to figure out who the teams in the screenshots are. We will not accept plain lists of logs without any comments!
Please note that the success of your request also strongly depends on the free slots in the tier you aim for. Established teams will be favored over new teams or teams that request to jump a tier. The screenshots have to be uploaded to an online image storage service (for example, you can use Imgur or Dropbox). Keep in mind that if you opt for zipped archives with tons of pictures attached to an e-mail, your application will be ignored. Keep it clean.
If you are applying for Open tier (which is our entry division), you do not have to provide any proof that you are capable of playing at that level.

So uh why exactly has the spycicle been banned? Not even the majority of spies use that unlock, and thanks to the pyro update spy is already powerless against a pyro with a brain, so again I don’t see any reason to ban the spycicle.

@vclox, why am I not surprised that you’re the one who proposed this ban, even though you’re supposed to be a prem pyro you still find it that difficult to play against a spycicle spy? You would ban any spy weapon if that would make your life easier. Plus you’re not making any sense “if its useless then why care if its banned” nobody said its useless but most pyros with a brain should be capable of countering the spycicle “Just everyone who has to play against it on a daily basis hates it, even spies who use it” Yeah right, can you name a single spy who chooses to run the spycicle hates using it? And come on the only people who benefit from ban are pyro mains, as if pyro wasnt already easy enough lol
@4hp the spycicle is cancer though. I would compare it to the machina. The downside is negligible, and the upside is pretty big. For most spies with half a brain, its a straight upgrade. Having a get out of jail free card against pyros every 15 seconds is just not very balanced.
Feeling pretty mixed about this. I don’t mind Spy-cicle ban too much considering Milk and Jarate are still banned and it probably being marginally better, but I don’t see it changing much at all regardless and this being the only change is a bit sad. Due to the way the flames work the afterburn should only last 1-2 seconds if you get graced by them anyway. That + the amount of times you’re passively denying spies as pyro by melting their knife (without killing them) is also worth considering.
I’m more disappointed that prem players got asked for feedback on maps and literally nothing was done with it/it resulted in no changes (not sure what came forth out of said feedback). I guess the season is only a couple of weeks from here but I feel like you could’ve gotten away with running a cup of some sort at the very least.
Actually wouldnt mind the fists of steel being banned too, also a garbage-tier unlock gameplay wise.
Not sure what pyros you are refering to, Aleskee. But even a spy like myself wont be able to escape an pyro most of the time, and given my experience I wouldnt say that I got only half a brain. Also the downside might not look very big to you but Ive had moments where I was denied a med drop because my spycicle melted, a heavy main like you wouldnt understand how many times the knife wouldve been better, and unlike the DR the spycicle is not a “free out of jail card” because during that waiting period you cant stab anyone. I’m saddened that etf2l is basing their decisionmaking off people who dont play spy or pyro, unlike weapons such as the machina, milk, jarate etc.. no other class except pyro benefits from this ban. Like why are we banning something based on a single class?

Spy-cicle never was banned. On my opinion spycicle is useful when pyro hits you by such 1 random flame spychecking around. Otherwise pyro with min 100iq can find spy with spycicle, more than that not many spies are using perma spycicle. And I really don’t see the reason to ban it lol. Nobody complains about spycicle except VcLoX. Spy has to have a chance to get out from pyro when he hits him. that chance is so small and you decide to remove it? It’s not nice. Yeah I agree with FTH next ban is probably gonna be default knife :)

If everyone’s so up in arms about the ban how about next time weapon bans are being decided you join in :) . I had an opinion about the spycicle (as I’m sure many pug players know) and others in the ban discussion either agreed or disagreed. It seems most people there though agreed with me that its dumb otherwise we wouldn’t be having this conversation. And about the whole spy thing, I was going to name say someone like Adje as he is talked about his displeasure of the weapon before, maybe hate was a strong word but it is certainly not a onesided opinion. They didn’t just see me complain about it and instantly ban it, they took many other prem players opinions and judgements. For example, Nubbi and some others saying how the beggars should be un-banned was discussed but clearly the overall opinion was to not allow the weapon. If you are trying to blame me or other brain dead players go for it. But clearly a majority ruled in favour of banning the weapon and that kids is how democracy works ¯\_(ツ)_/¯
in most democracies you have a vote and you somehow announce there is a vote, I can state my opinion towards a wall and say we should ban engy, pyro and spy from competitive gameplay and since I’m the only one that knows there even is a vote in the first place that will be a slamming win for my party. There’s worse unlocks out right now that make significantly more sense to ban and there’s banned unlocks that don’t have a lot of reasons to be banned right now. Also @vclox it’s hilarious to me how a “prem pyro” can not counter a weapon that blocks fire damage for 1 second? if you actually have so much issues dealing with a weapon like that maybe you and 4hp should switch divisions.
Nightmare, the spycicle doesn’t guarantee escape from a pyro, and a good pyro will probably be able to kill you anyway so I agree with that. But the real benefit of the spycicle is not being punished for bad positioning/timing while crossing the point on koth for example. If you get set on fire while crossing point with the default knife you are pretty much always dead. With the spycicle you are allowed to go back and try again, or somehow manage to cross regardless of being set on fire. I also don’t buy the whole “put the spy out of action for 15 seconds” argument simply because picking up ammo significantly reduces the cooldown, so in most scenarios its a 7-8 second cooldown. Maybe if valve changed it to work similarly to the DR where ammo pickups had no effect on the recharge rate it would be better.
Additionally, being denied med drops and using that as an argument, is like a machina sniper saying that he cant kill a 50hp scout thats fighting him close range. It’s a downside that occurs rarely compared to the amount of times that you benefit from the weapon’s other attributes.
I hardly hate the Spy-cicle, I wouldn’t have been using it for two years straight if that were the case. I do think banning Spy-cicle is definitely a better option than unbanning Milk and/or Jarate however, if tracking spies is that much of a problem nowadays (which I don’t feel it is, but I’m biased of course). It’s better but I don’t know about banning it. If Spy-cicle gets banned for being slightly better, it kind of blurs the line between what unlocks should be banned for being ever so slightly better than the stock variant. An example would be Iron Bomber.
It would be cool to have something similar to what you guys did for maps but for the whitelist for future seasons though. That’s one of the few things UGC has always done a better job at (actually doing something with the feedback not really though). I searched the word ‘Spycicle’ in the discussion channel for a quick reference and I can count the amount of people who said the unlock is overpowered on one hand, the rest not having an opinion cause they most likely don’t care.
Also unban Beggars please, there’s no reason to have it banned as the bug related to it has been fixed. It’s only good for like one specific suicide on Badwater and you can do some crazy sync jumps on Warmtic, but in any other scenario that weapon is pretty bad.

@Vclox If you can counter the weapon then why would you suggest in banning it in the first place? As it has been said after the Pyro Update the spy became weaker however you look at it, the pyro’s flames also are hideously bad, idea for the spycicle was to somewhat counter the pyro, when spycicle melts so he can preferably use his gun and almighty aim. But when you said “how democracy works” it just blew my mind how way behind time you are in every single way. Spycicle is a “upgrade” of some sort to a stock knife, cus you can get a pick of some sort and if u get hit by the flames ofc it will melt but that will give you a SLIGHT chance of escaping to a pyro. So if you use stock you will burn to death no matter what, upside of stock is that you can still get a backstab while you are on fire but with spycicle u are negating that option to stab sooo… I don’t see a point in which a almighty PREM PYRO would say that it needs a ban if he can track it down or do a job of pyro and spychecking so his teammates in combo don’t get stabbed. I could say that phlog should be banned too and scorch shot but I don’t they do have their ups and downs and are annoying to play against, so what’s your comment on that? Why didn’t you suggest to ban the phlog or I don’t know what else?
The scorch shot is already banned….. And the phlog has such a massive downside of stopping the pyro from doing his other roles e.g. denying ubers and reflecting reflect bois. Its not that I can’t kill a spycicle spy. Its that I don’t like playing against it when it has many upsides and rather few downsides on comparisons to other weapons/unlocks that are available. There are very few weapons that have many more upsides than downsides. The spysicle being that if the pyro hits you. You can’t stab someone for 7ish secs (assuming you know ammo placement) so its not much of a downside. Compared to stock where you can kill an extra gamer, sure but most of the time you would die and not get a kill after if on stock either as airblast is so strong. And I’m not sure why people are saying such things as ‘slight chance’ when a spy (and most good ones do) don’t cloak again once found but instead shoot at the gamers. The amount of times a spy kills someone extra because he shoots them is quite a lot tbh. It makes it so such strategy’s as flaregun and using your flamethrower useless to kill them as there is no afterburn and they can kill you or any class but heavy in 3 clicks making it rather annoying and frustrating to lose after you have already found and delt a significant amount of dmg. Anyway thats my rant @fluff, I hope you enjoy and learn to love democracy :)

If you read some of the posts from above you can see some of the many upsides it provides. Having your knife disappear for 5-7 secs isnt much of a downside. But I’m glad you have an opinion in a democratic society, you have a voice :). Too bad it seems like that’s too late tho :/ . They might change it sure, like when the DR was banned but then people cried in the comments so it was reversed. Maybe it will happen again who knows. I hope not but what can you do. If you knew me you could easily answer that last question but you don’t :(.
Also yeah banning pyro a good idea, just have 2 engies instead. One is mini while one is big boi sentry.

I can barely consider this a democracy when only a minority group participated in the spycicle ban discussion, and the only one that I’ve heard so far who actually benefits from this is vclox. When etf2l made that thread last season about banning the iron bomber, I heard a lot of good arguments and from what I’ve seen the majority voted for banning it, but it never got banned?? And now a small minority group debates about banning the spycicle which has never been banned or even thought about being banned and now it’s 2018 and people are oversensitive and instantly jump on the bandwagon whenever someone makes a suggestion to ban something because it’s kinda cheap.
Calling it a “free out of jail card” yeah right I can apply that argument to so many other weapons, I think it’s unfair for example that a soldier can instantly jump away with gunboats, or that the heavy can heal himself for 200 health and then have a 3 second recharge time with the banana, or how a conch+cuckbox soldier never dies because he gets more health back than what the enemy deals.
Most of the people here aren’t even spy mains but even then I’m sure that everyone is aware that pyro is still in a broken stage. I’ve had countless moments where a pyro would hit me with flames from 20 m away, where a pyro would hit me through the walls with flames?? (gotta love product) or that I would die from 60 afterburn damage. The spy is not a combo class, it’s an individual, being behind enemy lines and getting lit on fire means death, even if it’s a small ignition the spy will die and you can either use your big brain to not cross the point; which a spy shouldn’t do already fyi. Or you can stay away from the pyro all the time.
With weapons like the detonator it’s just going to be so easy for a pyro to do an easy 20 damage afterburn damage to a spy who just happens to walk somewhere and accidentally gets hit by a detonator.
The spycicle is not comparable to the jarate and milk, nobody but the pyro benefits from the spycicle being banned while the milk and jarate can give a clear advantage on KOTH maps, or cp_steel where a sniper just constantly throws jarate out of spawn next to whiteroom. The spy already lost 2 of it’s major weapon choices and now we got to ban another weapon choice, what’s next? ban the letranger because it’s unfair that the spy can get instant cloak back from shooting someone? Ban the kunai because it’s unfair that the spy can get 200 health? Instead of banning stuff we should work to allow things but you know a pyro main suggests something to make his life easier and everyone suddenly agrees even though they personally have never thought about the idea of banning that weapon, insanely biased but whatever I guess

I’m just more vocal than most about it and thought I should at least communicate to people not enjoying the decision. It seems though everyone is just here to insult my IQ and say I’m bad for playing a class. That because I am bad I need to ban it D: . I suggested it for many reasons (like many other weapon ban convos). People talked about it. Seems most people there wanted it banned for one reason or another. It goes to ETF2L admins of the league etc (I assume) and then they have a final say on it. I didn’t get my pyro beta furry weeb army and storm etf2l with requests lmao.

The thing I don’t understand is why we were asked these questions and then there was no pre season cup to test possible changes? I think almost all the feedback given in the discord was under the assumption the chanegs would be tested in a competitive environment rather than just directly implemented.
@FTH what the admins are using is the “prem_hl_discussions” chat on discord. To be in it you have to have played 3 prem games during the last 2 seasons.

Is exactly what I mean, a small minority group, not even a handful debates about banning a weapon while none of them actually play spy. And this is very biased and unfair since it’s basically impossible to defend against the decision of banning it and this is why we should have a cup or at least an etf2l thread to discuss this ban. That is a democracy.
So yeah etf2l admins, can the ban be reserved? Or at least can an etf2l thread be created to properly discuss this matter because right now I didn’t see any good argument from the opposing party, all I’ve heard is “It’s annoying to play against” and “it has more upsides than downsides” and the latter applies to a lot more weapons, e.g. iron bomber, banana, gunboats, blackbox.

I can’t stress enough what Middle just said, like sure feedback was collected but it’s mostly just theorycrafting and these things need/were expected to be tested. From a quick glimpse, weapons that were mentioned vary from but are not limited to: Beggar’s Bazooka, Milk, Jarate, Machina, Spy-cicle, Wrangler, Rescue Ranger, Crusader’s Crossbow, Short Circuit and Iron Bomber (just going by whatever I skimmed through).
I would have preferred ETF2L reaching out to prem players, asking for their opinion, using that as their base for a test cup and then see what people think from there, rather than directly implementing some of the things that were discussed without being very transparent with (non-) prem players what is happening behind the scenes. If that is not possible due to time constraints or other reasons, at least be transparent about it. The handful of people who are present in that Discord are not representative of the entire community, let alone the entire part of that community that plays prem.
Also I’m not saying that the opinions of people who have played at the highest level of your gamemode aren’t worth more, but if you exclude the rest you can hardly call that a democratic way of going about it.
tl;dr if it’s too late, it’s just fucking Spy so who cares lol, but the way this was handled was very lacking and there was not a lot of transparency, so calling people out for not giving feedback is a no-go because they didn’t know they were even capable of giving their feedback on something.

I wish it was sarcasm, but 4 people voting to ban an unlock while the league consists of a lot more players sounds exactly like “I went to the ETF2L admins and said “ban this weapon pls xoxo” and It just happened.” Because that is what happened right now, you’re using the discord as a medium to fulfil your own desires, and because most people don’t use that medium to discuss weapon bans there was no opposing side for the ban, you basically got a free-card just by proposing to ban it.
The stupid thing here is if I would make a retarded suggestions like “let’s ban the degreaser because the upsides are bigger than the downsides) and 6 random people would agree with me, I’m sure the admins would ban the degreaser as well, and that’s what’s wrong with this currently. Like I’m not even playing spy this season but even then it’s just wrong that 4 people can vote to ban something and it happens.

@Nightmare you are somehwat missing the point. The thing with the spycicle was that 4 people voted to test banning in preseason cup and go from there with feedback. I was silent on the spycicle because I personally was a vote yes on etsting it and a vote no on banning it and thought I could talk about why not to ban after the test cup. However the admins removed the test cup without telling anyone, and took the silence form people waiting for the test cup as people being indifferent. So of the 35 people ‘asked’ 4 voted ‘yes’ and 31 were indifferent. When in actuality those 4 yes votes were likely yes for testing not yes for ban, and those 31 indifferent votes were most likely people waiting to test the ban so they can have an informed opinion.

spycicle ban is retarded, it’s just 1 second that the pyro have to use his brian and tracking to track the spy while he got the fire hit effect off and then he’ll eventually get it smh.
I don’t feel this change was by any means necessary. It’s not often I struggle to kill a spy running the spycicle, and honestly it gives me to the freedom to roam a little more while his knife is regenerating. I mean I’m not outraged, or suggesting this be undone, I just don’t think it was needed.
