Highlander Season 9 powered by marketplace.tf Premiership Qualifiers, Rules Update & Staff change

Date November 1, 2015

First let us start off with congratulating European Strong Opinions and Poland Feila eSports finanzieren durch of winning their respective matches in the Highlander Season 9 Premiership Qualifiers. We wish them the best of luck this season.

Rules Update

Seeing that there was some misunderstanding last highlander season regarding this rule we’re slightly editing it to hopefully make it more clear.

3.5 Switching line-ups or hijacking teams is not allowed

A team may not be replaced in a competition by a new team or lineup without admin permission. Teams can be qualified as ‘new’ if half or more of their active roster get changed since the start of the competition. Cases will be reviewed individually, and decisions made will be at the full discretion of the admin team and all circumstances will be taken into account. Please contact an admin if your team is facing extreme line-up changes.

Together with that rule we’ll also be adding in a additional one regarding mercs in highlander.

1.4.1 Perma-mercs are not allowed

A player can only be used as a merc 3 times for one and the same team per season (regardless of the player being an approved or default-merc). If a player has been used as a merc 3 times for a team already they  aren’t allowed to join the team in question. After the fourth match as a merc for the same team, the player is considered a perma-merc.
If a player is caught or reported perma-mercing, we will review the case and decisions made will be at the full discretion of the admin team and all circumstances will be taken into account. Note: in accordance with General Rule 2.3, only one team change per competition is tolerated.

Staff changes

why the merc rule? so keen players can’t play extra games?

Looks like it’s to stop people taking the piss and playing for 2 teams simultaneously.

whats the problem with it if the other team accepts?
i mean ok, if they can’t be defaulted sure, but if the other team says yes i dont see the problem

I’ll be that guy. Can we get a clear definition of “active roster”, please?

ATX: If they allow a player to play for 2 teams at the same time, they might as well allow multiple accounts. So it does make sense. It wouldn’t be fair towards the players that got banned for multiacc.

We do not introduce rules mid season. Therefore this rule will not be used for Season 22, but it will be used starting Season 23.

You are all retarded. Permamercing is inherently anticompetitive and allows prem players to play in open and abuse the default merc rule to still play with his real team in prem.

Not saying it couldn’t happen, but has it happened before, Kaja?

    Also fuck LazyBear.

  13. Aoshi: (Legend) - .:[aAa]:. said:

@Goreston, the players that get used for games are seen as the players in the active lineup. So the players that have actively played the last official(s)

Bulow, maybe not open afaik, but it has definitely happned several times. I’ve even abused this loophole myself so I know from experience how dumb it is.

    @georgebaii: not really.

  16. S@GA: MERKEL - op_sqd said:

@kaja, then maybe your open team or whatever should’ve been placed in a higher div? Perma mercing doesn’t mean your scenario is bound to happen. All that should matter is if mercs are allowed by the enemy team

Nice example Russian Guyovich! Looks like they lost most of their matches though, they must suck.

  18. Goreston said:

@Aoshi So even if you use subs that have been rostered the whole season, having 5 players differ from one week’s match to the next counts as hijacking?

(This is not intended as a criticism. I do understand that the admins will likely make exceptions if half of your team eats sushi from the same petrol station and has to take a week off to talk to God on the big white telephone. I just think that this rule needs to be crystal clear, as it doesn’t seem immediately wrong to field 5 subs.)

  19. Goreston said:

@ATX That seems to contradict what Aoshi says above. Admins, can we get some clarification please?

  20. Goreston said:

Oh, hang on. I think I’ve got it. It’s a hijack if half of the active roster consists of players not rostered at the start of the season?

  21. MoistPenguin: TC said:

Yes Goreston that is pretty much it.

Any players on your roster by the start of the season are fine to play in any games subs or not. It is only players added after the season has started, i.e. any players added after this weekend, that would be considered in a hijacking complaint. This rule is in place because for example a team in mid could replace half their team with prem players, which would be unfair on the rest of mid.

Now while we apply this rule to any players joining a roster an open team getting 5 more open players is very different to the previously mentioned scenario which is why we ask leaders to contact us before they make these big roster changes. If we are contacted the likelihood of us having to punish the team greatly decreases.

  22. Goreston said:

    @MoistPenguin

Thanks very much for the clarification.

s@ga you can’t place an entire team one division above their skill level because they have one prem player playing in their official

  26. S@GA: MERKEL - op_sqd said:

Still doesn’t seem to be an issue which would need an extra rule. I did this once myself, continued as leader with my HLO team in div 6 where I played every official while I “perma merced” for Team Nein in div 1 where I also played every official.

This new rule would’ve made that impossible and so either my HLO would’ve probably not participated in the season or T9 would’ve had to look for a new engy. Both scenarios not that great since I already played with T9 in 1 ETF2L and 1 UGC season before and a team not participating is obviously even worse considering the declining amount of signups.

Sure this is just a 1 case example but then again this rule is pointless and also just for very few cases.

There is a limit on players only being on one roster of the same type (6v6, Highlander, 2on2 etc). No one has a problem with this rule, but suddenly us introducing a rule which prevents the bypass of the roster limitations I described and some people are suddenly having problems with that?

I really don’t understand. Do you think people should be allowed on more than 1 roster of the same type? That’s essentially what you’re saying.

  29. S@GA: MERKEL - op_sqd said:

Well it might be one way to understand it even tho I do think the limit to one roster of each type is a good rule and it really isn’t what I was trying to say and talking about it is not necessary as nobody suggested it needs to be changed.

And idk if it didn’t get through but yes I think players should be at least able to play whatever they want, whenever they want and with whoever they want as long as it doesn’t give them any unfair advantage over others which is simply not given since teams can only use mercs allowed by default when they have the same skill level or when they’re approved by the enemy team.

Where is the abuse in that? Where does the need to create new uncalled for regulations come from? Why do you suddenly think you need to limit the freedom of your players actions?

If a team is so bad that it can’t function without a perma-merc then it doesn’t even deserve to be a part of the season tbh.

The Perma-merc rule is only gonna increase multiple accounts.

  32. Popcorp said:

Thing about this rule, is that it really messes up Prem and Playoffs.

What happened a season ago, when Scissors left Chessclub due to team problems, Chess was forced to use Lex as a Perma-merc, because they could not afford to look for a new Pyro mid season.

I dont see the need for this rule, what’s its purpose? If you want to prevent a player from playing in 2 different teams, then just alter this rule a bit, instead of restricting perma-mercing, just remove Default Merc status on the player who merced for the same team for more than 3 times, that way enemy team has to approve him.

“If a team is so bad that it can’t function without a perma-merc then it doesn’t even deserve to be a part of the season tbh.”

If we talk about Highlander, losing a player who plays a class that nobody wants to play, for example Heavy or Medic, then good luck finding a proper permanent replacement, there are simply not enough good, prem-level Heavy and Medic mains. So if you’re in a prem team and you lose your Heavy, due to some irl or w/e reasons, you’re just forced to use a merc, ofc you can switch heavies all the time and then you wont break any rules, but from Team’s perspective, Heavy/Medic playstyles differ a lot, and it can be hard to adjust to new player each week.

And Im talking about losing a player mid-season ofc.

  33. Bulow: GG said:

Bubble, I was referring to Prem players in Open, not Div2 players in Prem like you. PG should be applauded for trying to compete in prem while handicapping themselves :^)

    @Popcorp
In which case, contact an admin an explain the situation. I genuinely don’t get what is so wrong with the rule. Nobody has a problem with not being on multiple rosters rule.

Lex played in three officials so he wouldn’t have been affected by this rule anyway lol
