How to remove Soundscapes from maps

1. Download the following file: nosoundscapes.vpk (mirror)
2. Place the .vpk in the custom folder inside the tf folder (default path: steam/steamapps/common/team fortress 2/tf/custom).
3. Launch the game and enjoy the silence.

Pretty sure it’s allowed since it has negligible effect on gameplay and since other mods like this are also allowed (changing LOD bias, no hats plugin etc.). Still, discussion regarding legality is welcomed. You can not get VAC-banned for using this.

Don’t know who originally found it, so I can’t give credit to anyone. (EDIT: credit to Paymh for the files)

EDIT: It doesn’t remove all map sounds, just soundscapes. If you don’t know what a soundscape is, here is a useful link explaining what it is: https://developer.valvesoftware.com/wiki/Soundscape

EDIT 2: It doesn’t work on Gullywash because there are no soundscapes in it. The sounds you hear are produced through other methods and can’t be disabled with this mod! It works on most maps though.

It’s not adding/changing/removing sounds. It’s changing/removing what sounds are loaded for the background noise of each map.

These files are in the scripts folder, which I think is allowed because some HUD files are in there.

Yeah, the background sounds. Like turbines turning, birds tweeting, machines etc.

There are no custom sound files in the vpk, it’s simply some .txt files which dictate how soundscapes are loaded or something. Don’t know the technicalities behind this. The reason this works is the same reason why custom huds work; sv_pure 2 doesn’t actually block every custom file, just materials, models, sounds (except hitsound) etc.

all it removes are background map noises. footsteps, gunshots, pickups etc are not background noises. it is just removing atmospheric sounds, nothing useful.
