Got no team and tf2pickup.net is down. What is else is left? Or are lobbies the only chance?

Get to know people.
Joining a team or even merely the process of trialing for several teams will get you in contact with people. Add everyone you enjoy playing with, get invited to mixes or create them yourself.

Add people from the Recruitment section who are your div, and mix with them.
