I’m running windows 7 now that i have a new laptop and it doesn’t seem to recognise tf2 as an application. It runs fine, even youtube in firefox (so it’s not the sound card) but in the sound mixer it shows mumble and steam but not firefox/tf2. Any ideas?

Edit: Turns out when i re-enabled speakers it played through them, so any way to configure tf2 to play through headphones? In audio it knows the configuration is headphones

Could you describe in some more detail? It plays fine through speakers but not when you plug a headset in? Does it continue to play via the speakers when you do so? Do other apps work with the headset? etc

Try plugging in your headphones and then restarting with the headphones still in, and then trying again (your headphones should be in all of the time whilst doing this).

I’m thinking that maybe TF2 and Quake lock their DirectSound devices when launched.

Cloud: It plays fine through the speakers when they are enabled (with or without headphones plugged in), but when disabled no sound comes through at all. Youtube and mumble work fine, quake and tf2 don’t.

Chris: my headphones are always plugged in and i’ve restarted a few times when doing other methods so i guess that should suffice. And if the problem is that, any way to solve it?

By “disabled” do you mean you switched the audio device to the headphones, or simply switched em off with the laptop?

If you right click the audio symbol in the bottom right you can set jacks, speakers, USB devices, etc, as default playback and recording. Perhaps try setting the headphones as default, then when they’re unplugged it should switch to speakers (I use a little app for this but anyway) – assuming it’s not set already.

I had a similar issue when I first installed, not sure if yours is the same from the description, but try it

Disabled = in playback devices i disabled the speakers. This leaves my headphones enabled as default communications device, but when i try to set it as simply default device it does nothing. This may be the issue. When my headphones are unplugged there is simply no sound since everything is umplugged/disabled
